Alcoholics Unanimous album
$19.25 After the initial shock fades, the existence of CHRISTMAS IN THE HEART seems perhaps inevitable. After all, the thing Bob Dylan loves most of all are songs that are handed down from generation to generation, songs that are part of the American fabric, songs so common they never seem to have been written. These are the songs Dylan chooses to sing on CHRISTMAS IN THE HEART, a cheerfully old-fashioned holiday album from its Norman Rockwell-esque cover to its joyous backing vocals. Apart from the breakneck "Must Be Santa," which barrelhouses like a barroom, Dylan doesn't really reinterpret these songs as much as simply play them with his crackerjack road band, dropping in a little flair -- restoring "we'll have to muddle through somehow" to "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," singing the opening of "O Come All Ye Faithful" in its original Latin -- but never pushing tunes in unexpected directions. Many would argue having Dylan croon these carols is unexpected enough and, true, there are times his gravelly rumble is a bit pronounced, but nothing here feels forced, it all feels rather fun, provided you're on the same wavelength as latter-day Bob, where the sound and swing of the band is as important as the song, where there's an undeniable nostalgic undertow to all the proceedings. And, of course, there's no better time for celebratory sound, swing, and nostalgia than the holidays, which may be why CHRISTMAS ...

| | Baroness Blue Record Vinyl LP (2009)
Alcoholics Unanimous music CDs
$26.05 Georgia-based psychedelic rock band (calling them a metal act seems very reductive, though there's some seriously headbangable material on this disc) Baroness has made a subtle but unmistakable evolutionary leap on this, their second full-length and a clear companion piece to 2007's RED ALBUM. It's hard to say exactly what new guitarist Pete Adams has brought to the band after replacing drummer Allen Blickle's brother Brian, but the band's established blend of Southern sludge riffs, druggy instrumental journeys, and melodic interstitial interludes, all propelled by a particularly thudding drum sound and held together by John Baizley's hoarse but clean vocals ...

| Sleep Dopesmoker Vinyl LP (2003)
Alcoholics Unanimous CD music
$16.29 Subtle is not a word that could ever be applied to Northern California doom-metallists Sleep. DOPESMOKER, a record with a backstory almost as interesting as the album itself, is about, oddly enough, smoking dope. Lots of it, all the time. There are other metal/prog lyrical themes here, too, but in general, this is a long, loud salute to the demon weed. That Sleep managed to make this album on a major label's dime is utterly amazing, although turning it in cost them their deal and the album was released in a frustratingly chopped-up form as 1999's JERUSALEM. That experience caused the band to split, and many wondered whether the original recording would ever see the light of day. Thankfully, this bass-heavy, droning opus--which features lead singer Al Cisneros (later of Om) growling like an angry hound--was issued by Tee Pee Records in 2003. As a favor to fans, the reissue ends with a 10-minute-long bonus track intended to be a palate cleanser after an hour of stoner dirge.

Alcoholics Unanimous music CDs
$5.79 Something of an L.A. supergroup featuring members of the Rhythm Roots All-Stars, Breakestra, and Madlib's Sound Directions, the Lions play a version of dub reggae heavily influenced by funk styles from around the globe. Deep dub grooves and classic rock-steady horns abound, but the crack players in the Lions also look to Africa, South America, the Caribbean, and the United States (see the niced-up version of Lynn Collins's classic "Think" for an example of the latter) for their musical ingredients. At its heart, JUNGLE STRUTTIN' is a virtuosic mix of Jamaican riddims, funky grooves, jazzy licks, and a sense of One Love positivity that ...

Alcoholics Unanimous songs
$22.89 Far removed from their rap-metal roots, these masked men of extreme metal show no signs of relenting with VOL. 3: (THE SUBLIMINAL VERSES). For this brutal chapter of the Slipknot story, the jagged sound of fierce heaviness and moody melodicism is executed deftly, as Slipknot ducks crossover cliches and nu-metal formula. Esteemed studio guru Rick Rubin captures the group's raw intensity with sonic reverence, a feat not easily achieved with bands of this style. VOL. 3 delivers all the elements that Slipknot fans have come to expect and demand. From solid, catchy choruses ("Duality") to fearsome blasts of noise and percussive gymnastics ("Three Nil," "Welcome"), and borderline balladry ...
