75 Pumpin' Piano Greats album
$8.85 "Lifetime" was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance.
Rebounding from the slight sophomore lag generated by 1998's EMBRYA, Maxwell's follow-up NOW abandons the neo-soul man's usual M.O. of using a conceptual arc of songs, and instead focuses on individual cuts. Romance remains the main ingredient found in this Brooklyn native's banquet of song, and although he stands firmly in the neo-soul camp of D'Angelo and Erykah, his use of various stylistic nuances ...
| | Best Of The Gap Band CD (1995)
75 Pumpin' Piano Greats CD music
$11.99 A collection from the Mercury funk lineup that covers the hits from the first five Gap Band albums. Every major hit that they had is included here. What one might notice is that all of the major hits ("You Dropped a Bomb on Me," "Burn Rubber on Me," "Early in the Morning," and "I Don't Believe You Want to Get up and Dance") all sound surprisingly similar. This may or may not be a large surprise to everyone, but the bright note about their similarity is that the basic riffs and rhythms that they all use are extremely catchy. The energy that the Gap Band exudes in the midst of producing a song is stunning, and this compilation displays ...

75 Pumpin' Piano Greats album
$18.05 Only the most obsessive crate-digger is likely to be familiar with all (or even most) of the rare sides collected on this CD compilation, but the French record collectors at Body and Soul have dug up some very solid grooves that will make you move if even if you've never heard them before. The Marvells' two-part "Forget About That Mess" urges listeners to overlook violence and social strife in favor of the good groove (not always bad advice), and the Soul Shakers offer up some more pointed commentary on the fiery "You Ain't My Brother." The Family Plann beat the Jackson Five at their ...

$33.75 | | Tickle Me Pink Madeline CDs (2007) With DVD
75 Pumpin' Piano Greats CD music
$7.59 Tickle Me Pink's Madeline offers up a familiar interpretation of 21st century emo: lovelorn lyrics, youthful bravado, flat-ironed fashion, and angsty melodies howled by a young, mopheaded frontman. This 11-track debut album rarely tackles any subject beyond the bandmates' girl troubles: "You can't play me like that," asserts the opening song, "It's a matter of fact you're nothing more than a typical whore." Teenagers might gravitate toward that sort of adolescent catharsis, but Tickle Me Pink's emo songs would benefit from distinguishing elements that might set the group apart from the countless other bands that grew up on a steady diet of Jimmy Eat World, Chris Carrabba, and MySpace. That's not to say that Tickle Me Pink need a gimmick to succeed; they just need more to distinguish them from the pack, since emo has become a very congested genre in 2008. The title track comes close to finding that identity; after beginning with a breezy verse, it quickly becomes an ode to a fallen childhood friend, complete with minor-keyed progressions and passionate vocals. ~ Andrew Leahey
