| Nice. I never really liked AC/DC, but this album changed everything. I love every song on it, especially Night Prowler. I'll have that on repeat for hours. It's amazing! By N.Stalker13 (Night) This review is for a different format. |
| Surely their best album ever. I know some will disagree with Mutt Lange's approach with AC/DC, but to me he clearly brought to light their best. Here he does what Vanda/Young couldn't figure out with the sound on Powerage.I'm always torn between Let there be rock or Highway to hell as my fave. | Screw BACK IN BLACK. This is AC/DC's peak. Bon Scott had one of the most unique and pleasing voices of any rocker, and HIGHWAY TO HELL is the perfect marriage between his yelp and the Young brother's flawless guitar playing. Unlike the bloated BACK IN BLACK, the guitars here are tight and quick, the lyrics are snappy and clever, and the overall feel is more like juiced up punk than metal. "If You Want Blood (You've Got It)" is the best example of this. The lyrics are simple, but when Bon yells them in his deliciously unsmooth croak, it gets your heart racing--especially the bone-rattling scream. The Youngs, as ever, are on fire throughout, giving "Blood" an incredible beat. "Shot Down In Flames" IS the reason this album is better than BACK IN BLACK. It's a seemingly simple do-it-in-the-tub anthem, but Bon is having so much fun that even the most anti-sexist among us can't help but crack a smile. He yelps out the hilarious lyrics in perfect timing to Angus and Malcom, whose thudding guitars lead perfectly into the chorus. Best of all, this song isn't 'I did this chick', it's 'I tried to do this chick and failed miserably'. Isn't that just so much better? Every other song on here is great, from the delicious groove of "Touch Too Much"(incredibly clever lyrics for a sex song: 'body like Venus with arms'), the incredible riffs of "Beating Around The Bush", and the epic power of both the soaring "Walk All Over You" and the truly evil "Night Prowler", a superb closer. The peak of HIGHWAY TO HELL, though, comes in the first song: the title track. It's hard to describe. Those first chords build such a suspense. I shiver with delight when Phil Rudd's drums come in with perfect harmony to the guitars. And then there's Bon, almost whispering some of his coolest, most powerful, yet most simple lyrics...until the ecstatic chorus, when the band hurls all their immense power into a surge behind Bon's description of his life: "I'm on the highway to hell!" "Highway to Hell"'s amazing combination of punk simplicity and metallic power make it one of the greatest rock songs ever. Like this whole album, it creates a world entirely more believable then enjoyable than anything Sabbath or Metallica. Get it now. To quote the late Bon Scott, GET IT HOT!
