Creedence Clearwater Revival is widely regarded as one of the most electric and exhilarating live rock & roll acts of all-time, and 1980's THE CONCERT is one of rock's finest live albums. Originally released as LIVE AT THE ALBERT HALL 1970, the album was quickly recalled and re-titled THE CONCERT when it became known that the concert was in fact recorded live at the Oakland Coliseum in California, not at England's famous Albert Hall. Nonetheless, you couldn't ask for more from a live Creedence disc--at nearly an hour in length, it represents all of the hits (as well as a few key album tracks), and the selections all shine in a live setting.
An opening rendition of the swamp-rock classic "Born on the Bayou" shows the band slowing the tempo a bit, creating a killer groove in the process. Soon you realize how many timeless classics John Fogerty and company created--"Green River," "Who'll Stop the Rain," "Proud Mary," and "Down on the Corner" are all prime CCR. In a live setting, the anti-Vietnam "Fortunate Son" is even more venomous than the studio take, while the nine-minute jamfest "Keep on Chooglin'" closes the album on a high note.

The Cinderella-esque climb from lo-fi indie cult artist to Grammy nominee/major label darling must have been a perilous one for Smith, who makes the leap to the big time here after three well-regarded albums on small labels. He's lost none of his bite, though. The production values on XO may be slightly higher, but Smith's vision remains undiluted.
The production, centered around acoustic guitar augmented by keyboards and lush vocal harmonies, recalls pop icons like the Beach Boys (especially on the closing acapella cut), Beatles and Big Star, but this is no sunny Cali-pop album. Taking the place of the obligatory cd two-fer of GP and GREVIOUS ANGEL, Gram Parsons's THE COMPLETE REPRISE SESSIONS covers it all and then some for Grampires of all stripes. Produced by Emmylou Harris and Parsons cohort James Austin, this beautifully designed three-disc set includes one disc devoted to each solo record and a third featuring outtakes from each album's sessions. With fewer overdubs and Gram and Emmylou's vocals front-and-center in the mix, the final disc brims with the emotive soul and earthbound angelic vocals the two perfected. Among the final discs many highlights are looser alternate takes of "She" and "Streets of Baltimore" from GP and a "Hickory Wind" unadorned by the ridiculous fake crowd noise that mars the GRIEVOUS ANGEL version. The latter is the best and most stirring recorded performance of Parsons's signature song and alone worth the box's sticker price. Before David Gilmour virtually "became" Pink Floyd he was always the most likely member of the band (with the possible exception of de-facto leader Roger Waters) to release a solo album. 1978's welcome eponymous debut showcased his multi-faceted performing talents.
The album opener "Mihalis" is an ANIMALS period instrumental, which, along with "Raise My Rent," sounds like an outtake from that album. The beautiful "There's No Way Out of Here" begins with a lonely harmonica and, with "No Way" and "I Can't Breathe Anymore," expounds the album's main theme of being trapped in an untenable situation. "Cry From the Streets" is a nod to the blues, while the lovely "So Far Away" harks back to the ballads of OBSCURED BY CLOUDS. Almost a missing mid-period Floyd album, this solo effort is a must-have for all Pink Floyd fans.
