| | Zora Young Sunnyland CD Zora Young Discography of CDs
Zora Young has long established herself as a talented blues singer, though she was a soul singer when she started her professional career. One can feel the energy throughout this session, which features blues legend Hubert Sumlin playing guitar on several tracks, plus veterans like pianist Barrelhouse Chuck, tenor saxophonist Sam Burckhardt, trumpeter Chuck Parrish, and trombonist Steve Horne. Young's big voice never lacks energy nor does she act like a diva, as she generously features her sidemen and even sits out four songs completely. Her boisterous "Bad Track Record" is a solid opener, with down-home piano and spirited horns, while her "Football Widow" is a humorous ditty that encourages her man to get himself off the couch and take his woman out on the town, with a tasty solo by Sumlin. Sumlin takes Young's place in the spotlight with his laid-back blues "You Said You Were Leaving," also adding an effective lead vocal. Two instrumentals penned by Burckhardt include the toe-tapping "Blues for Hubert" and the jump blues "Sunnyland." To wrap this delightful session, Young and Sumlin co-composed "Looka Here Baby," performing it as a duet. Highly recommended. ~ Ken Dryden

Sunnyland album
$18.05 Growing up among Afro-Americans in Berkeley, CA, Greek-American Johnny Otis (born John Veliotes) always identified strongly with people of color. Before he had attained the age of 20 he was gigging with black jazz bands throughout the Southwest, and eventually organized an ensemble deliberately patterned after Count Basie's orchestra. This highly charged album of historical musical artifacts documents the very beginning of Johnny Otis' recording career. With one apparently unobtainable exception, the Classics Blues & Rhythm Series has assembled all of Otis' Excelsior recordings, made in Los Angeles between 1945 and 1947. This provides background and context for his more well-known Savoy material, and indeed for everything this amazing person accomplished during the second half of the 20th century. Otis' first act as a recording bandleader was to borrow Jimmy Rushing from Count ...

| | Hubert Sumlin About Them Shoes CD (2003)
Sunnyland songs
$14.65 One of the key architects of the Chicago blues sound, guitar master Hubert Sumlin is probably best known for his wiry, angular phases on Howlin' Wolf classics like "Smokestack Lightnin'" and "I Asked for Water." But Sumlin also worked with Muddy Waters, and ABOUT THEM SHOES pays overt homage to Chicago's favorite blues son with a set list full of Waters's originals and tunes written for Waters by Willie Dixon (the great songwriter, bassist, and Chicago session man).
ABOUT THEM SHOES finds Sumlin brings on a distinguished roster of guests, including drummer Levon Helm, harmonica player James Cotton, vocalist David Johansen, and six-string godheads Eric Clapton and Keith ...
| | B B King Mr. Blues/Confessin' The Blues CD (2005) (Import) Remastered; United Kingdom
Sunnyland album
$18.79 This CD contains B.B. King's first ABC-Paramount studio efforts -- Mr. Blues (1962) and Confessin' the Blues (1965), respectively. While there are inevitable similarities between the projects, offering them back-to-back allows listeners an acute sense of King's rapid maturation and development during what was by all accounts the nexus of the guitarist/vocalist's career. The dozen-song Mr. Blues was a haphazard start ...
