The title, KINGS OF DAMNATION, and the cover art, which features the silhouettes of a devil head and two Playboy bunnies sporting horns and forked tails, would lead most to assume that this is an all-out heavy metal offering. But guitarist Zakk Wylde likes to mix things up. Best known for his work with Ozzy Osbourne, Wylde doesn't stick to mainstream metal formulas in his solo work. Instead, he delves into heavy, bluesy jams, hardcore thrash, and country-flavored acoustic numbers, among other styles.
The bluegrass banjo that leads off "Losing Your Mind," the opener, should indicate pretty clearly that Black Label Society is not metal-as-usual. In fact, much of KINGS OF DAMNATION is quite melodic, and full of more traditional songcraft, as on the muscular, shifting "Sold My Soul" with its sweeping strings and verses. Wylde's husky voice suits the overall vibe nicely (in the lower register he sometimes sounds like ex-Soundgarden vocalist Chris Cornell), and the combo of serious riffage, good songwriting, and eclecticism makes this worth a listen for fans of hard, adventurous music.
Personnel: Zakk Wylde (vocals, guitar, piano, bass guitar); Nick "ET" Catanese (guitar); James LoMenzo (bass guitar); Craig Nunemacher (drums).

Kings Of Damnation album
$11.55 Around the late '90s/early 21st century, the traditional guitar solo in hard rock/heavy metal appeared to be a dying beast, as most bands were rejecting six-string leads in favor of focusing solely on detuned riffage (culminating a few years later with Metallica's sonic stinkbomb, St. Anger). But one early sign that the tide was changing was the arrival of the Zakk Wylde-led project Black Label Society, and their 1999 debut, Sonic Brew. Expectedly, the group is all about the almighty guitar -- loud 'n' proud riffs and solos abound -- while Wylde himself handles the vocal duties (and can alternate his voice between a more melodic Phil Anselmo on the heavier material, and a Southern rocker on the acoustic fare). The majority of the album's style is basically summed up with the opening track, "Bored to Tears," with a few detours along the way (such as acoustic guitar shredfest "T.A.Z.," and the ...

| | Peccatum Lost In Reverie CD (2004)
Kings Of Damnation music CDs
$10.05 For everyone who thought Emperor's final album sounded a little thin on ideas and inspiration (and that really was everyone!), Peccatum is the reason why. The fact of the matter is, even as the Norwegian black metal icons were winding down their legendary career with less-than-legendary efforts, lead songwriter and visionary Ihsahn was already preoccupied with this all-consuming family side project featuring his wife, Ihriel (also known for her work with Star of Ash), and brother-in-law Lord PZ. In fact, the trio had already waxed two full albums and an EP by the time of Emperor's dissolution, and although PZ had already moved on, Peccatum's third opus, 2004's Lost in Reverie, was the first to benefit from Ihsahn's undivided attention -- and it showed. A truly ambitious undertaking of post-metal experimentalism, Lost in Reverie pushes the genre's avant-garde boundaries to places neither Peccatum nor Emperor had yet dared explore, simultaneously breaking and rewriting all rules as it pleases its creators. Indeed, some might think that the opening tandem of "Desolate Ever After" and "In the Bodiless Heart" feature more good ideas than both of Emperor's ...
