Audio Mixer: DJ Giann. Before he was incarcerated in 2002 on a drug-related charge, Puerto Rican MC Tempo was one of the primary forces in laying the foundation of reggaeton. 2009's two-CD FREE TEMPO, recorded (as the name would imply) while the rapper still languished in prison, collects many of the major players in Latin hip-hop to back the cult legend on his first record in seven years. The first disc contains new recordings, buoyed by the Fat Joe-boasting title track, while the second disc features a live recording captured behind bars.

| | Wisin & Yandel La Revolucion: Evolution CDs (2009)
Free Tempo
$15.45 By 2009, the duo of Llandel Malave Veguilla (Wisin) and Juan Morera (Yandel) were well established as reggaeton royalty. While Wisin & Yandel professed a desire to return to their mid-1990s, pre-reggaeton explosion style on their seventh record, LA REVOLUCION, their heady fusion of disco-era Latin R&B and up-to-the-moment street-hop continues to evolve unabated. It's Wisin & Yandel's show, and they open it with proper bravado on the title track, injecting a sly romantic undercurrent to what could have been a straight boasting banger. Proof positive of the Puerto Rican pair's prowess comes on "Mujeres In The Club" where 50 Cent slows his drawl to a mesmerizing crawl, pocketing his swagger, simply augmenting a slyly seductive single. Released just weeks after their previous album, Los Extraterrestres, won Billboard's 2009 Latin Rhythm Album of the Year award, La Revolucion finds reggaeton superstars Wisin & Yandel on a serious roll. After the opening title track suggests a futuristic concept album on the scale of Don Omar's 2009 release iDon, La Revolucion slips into a much more standard album for the duo, which is hardly a disappointment. Bouncing between grand club numbers and smooth ballads, the overall structure is familiar to all returning fans, but just like Omar in 2009, the duo have become fans of euro-disco synths and urban dance music. The slick "Quitame El Dolor" stomps the ground like a Flo Rida cut while "Mujeres in the Club" creeps and swaggers ...

$9.79 Recording information: Del Angel Music Studios, Miami Beach, FL. Photographer: Kike San Martin. Arrangers: Alfonso Gutiérrez; Julián Navarro. Jose Luis "El Puma" Rodríguez is a legend among Latin pop crooners, a restrained, dignified figure who treads a narrow path between the sweaty histrionics of Juan Gabriel and the narcoleptic smoothness of José José. This album goes by quickly, offering 10 songs in 32 minutes, each one guaranteed to appeal to middle-aged Spanish-speaking women and pretty much no one else. The arrangements on the disc's first half, which offers five ballads in a row, aren't dissimilar to those that might be found on a Julio Iglesias album from any time in the last 20 years; he's backed by a small group that includes gentle percussion, restrained horns, a lead guitarist who takes brief solos Walter Becker and Donald Fagen would call "excessively polished", and synths that could have been programmed by Narada Michael Walden. On the album's second half, it's all uptempo numbers that would get any cruise ship's lounge jumping, ...
