Written and directed by Guillermo del Toro, PAN'S LABYRINTH is a thrilling, violent fairy tale set in post-Civil War Spain. Ivana Baquero stars as Ofelia, a young girl who moves with her mother, Carmen (Ariadna Gil), into the home of Captain Vidal (Sergi López), in an abandoned mill in the middle of dark, dangerous woods. Vidal is leading his team of soldiers against resistance fighters--and he will do whatever is necessary to kill every last one of them. As Vidal bosses around the pregnant Carmen, a flying creature leads Ofelia through a garden labyrinth and into an underground cave ruled by Pan (HELLBOY's Doug Jones), who believes that Ofelia might be the lost princess of this strange yet magical place. To prove she is royalty, Ofelia must complete three tasks, each more difficult and terrifying than the previous one. Meanwhile, Vidal is becoming more and more paranoid, torturing and murdering seemingly at will. Del Toro (THE DEVIL'S BACKBONE, HELLBOY, CRONOS) creates a marvelous battle between good and evil, between heroes and villains, in both the real world aboveground and the mystical land below. Baquero gives a compelling performance as the terrorized Ofelia, who is befriended by Mercedes (Maribel Verdú), a woman who harbors some secrets of her own. Stellar production design, superb special effects, and a stirring score by Javier Navarrete add to the scary fun. Selected as the closing-night entry in the 2006 New York Film Festival, PAN'S LABYRINTH is a captivating story that is not for the squeamish.

5 stars Perfect Sound, Perfect Picture, a Perfect Package!
El Laberinto del Fauno (aka Pan's Labyrinth) is one of those rare thought-provoking movies that become classics a decade after its release. A fantasy tale intertwined with the era of General Franco in Spain during the 1940s, the plot follows a young girl as she explores a mystical labyrinth behind the hacienda of her new stepfather, a ruthless pro-Franco military officer who is determined to eradicate the nation of anti-Fascist rebels. The HD DVD and Blu-Ray presentations both present the movie with DTS-ES HD 6.1ch master audio, but the standard DVD also comes with DTS-ES 6.1ch audio, so the HD duo provides the superior picture only. But I think it's worth the extra cost, particularly since the HD DVD will soon become a collectible.

5 stars SUPERB!
I so enjoyed this movie. Ive never been one to avoid subtitles but, even if you do, this is an exception for it's effects and emotional charge. The performance in a childs role is engrossing. Never once was I distracted from the story telling by poor actors. Well told, well, acted, well worth veiwing more then once.

5 stars stunning film
Pan's labyrinth is one of the best movies of 2006. The movie is about a young girl named ofelia whose mother has just married a evil facist man named captain vidal. Her mother is pregnant and very sick but she and ofelia share a loving bond.one day ,ofelia follows an insect like creature who leads her to an ancient, abandoned labyrinth.ofelia then meets a faun who tells her that she is really a princess by the name of princess moannna. The faun tells her that to rejoin her real mother father, she must complete three tasks before the moon is full.I won't give away what the tasks are,but I will say that all of them are superbly done.Meanwhile, captain vidal leads his men in the fight to destroy the remains of the rebel army who hide out in the mountains and a rebel spy infiltrates the outpost by working as a maid. This film is visually stunning and deservedly won oscars for best art direction, best cinematography, and best makeup.Director and screenwriter guillermo del tor has fashioned an enthralling, totally original fable that is simply unforgetable.A must see.

For his fourth directorial feature in the span of two years, Clint Eastwood tells the story of a grizzled Korean War vet's reluctant friendship with a Hmong teenage boy and his immigrant family. Set in contemporary Detroit, GRAN TORINO tackles the shifting cultural and economic landscape of not only the Motor City, but America as well. Eastwood stars as Walt Kowalski, an unabashed bigot who never heard a racial insult he didn't love. Bitter, haunted, and full of pride, Walt refuses to abandon the neighborhood he's lived in for decades despite its changing demographics as he clings desperately to a mindset long since out of step with the times. When his Hmong neighbor Thao tries to steal his prized muscle car as part of a gang initiation, Walt is forced to grapple with the world around him. GRAN TORINO's approach to the complicated issue of race relations is equal parts Archie Bunker and CRASH. That is to say, there is nothing subtle about Walt's bigotry, yet his misanthropy knows no bounds, and Eastwood does a remarkable job of finding the humor in Walt's equal opportunity racism. More than simply a racial morality tale, however, GRAN TORINO is about the unlikely bonds that people form to navigate the subtle complexities every day life. Like MILLION DOLLAR BABY, GRAN TORINO explores the challenging yet rich new world that can open up when individuals let down their guard, even if for just a moment. Estranged from his family and his church, and without any sense of personal peace, Walt offers all that he has to Thao and his family, namely wisdom and protection. When tragedy strikes the family, Eastwood allows a little classic Harry Callahan to poke through, but the surprising finale posits a hero that Dirty Harry would never have the guts to be. It's a potent symbolic gesture to Eastwood's own growth as a storyteller. Standard Screen; Soundtrack English; Behind The Scenes; Amaray Case

The former Soft Cell frontman peppers crowd-favorite hits from the 1980s and '90s with his more recent solo work--including tracks from his album OPEN ALL NIGHT--in this 2000 performance filmed live in Belgium. Marc Almond shot to prominence in 1981 as the front man and face of the synth pop duo Soft Cell when their dance-orientated debut single, 'Tainted Love' became a major hit worldwide. This DVD captures him in excellent form during his 2000 European Tour filmed at The Lokerse Feesten in Belgium. The concert opens with a selection of his recent work, including three songs from his critically acclaimed 1999 album, 'Open All Night'. These are followed by performances of his biggest hits from the Eighties and Nineties. Over the years Almond has always maintained his musical integrity and has continued to develop his highly distinctive style of torch singing. Often challenging and occasionally dealing with controversial and sleazy themes, his eclectic musical style has gained a loyal following with his fans and he remains a favorite with club and dance audiences around the world.
