| | Origins Live From Brazil CD Assads / Salerno-Sonnenberg CDS
A vibrant, sophisticated, contemporary classical CD of pulsating, rhythmic works recorded live in Brazil by renowned musicians violinist Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg and duo guitarists Sergio and Odair Assad, “Originis” will have listeners falling in love with Latin America. Named after the CD’s orchestral work (“Concerto Originis”) written for the trio by Sergio Assad, this passionate recording is the seventh from the NSS MUSIC label. It features the musicians performing with the Orquestra Sinfonica do Estado de São Paulo in “Originis”, and as a trio in works by Ginastera (Tres Danzas Argentinas), Piazzola (Milonga Per Tre) and Clarice Assad, Sergio’s daughter and award winning composer/pianist in her own right (Three Sketches). The CD comes complete with a special bonus track. “Originis,” with works by four composers performed by three musicians, featuring two different musical scopes – intimate and grand, equals one unique CD not to be missed. Origins Live From Brazil
$18.94 Andrea Bocelli's 2009 My Christmas album finds the Italian tenor performing various classic holiday-themed songs that touch on a mix of classical, opera, and pop. Included are such well-known holiday songs as "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town," "O Tannenbaum," and "Silent Night." The versatile Bocelli also delves into such iconic Christmas hits as "Blue Christmas" and "The Christmas Song" (featuring a duet with Natalie Cole). Of course, the opera and classic songs are Bocelli's bread and butter, and here listeners get such lavishly produced cuts as "Adeste Fidelis," "Cantique del Noel," and "Caro Gesu Bambino." My Christmas is not only a warm and inviting holiday album, but also a superb classical crossover entry worthy of Bocelli's discography. ~ Matt Collar

Origins Live From Brazil
$11.35 There are a number of elements that will grab the casual consumer's attention here, but let's face it, George Fenton's score isn't one of them. That's not to say his passionate, sensitive, often humorous orchestral compositions are unremarkable; his score is the perfect complement to this charming, old-fashioned film. It's just that the one pop track (Texas' "Put Your Arms Around Me") out of this soundtrack album's 22 cuts is the one that's bound to get all the attention. And naturally, there's not much point competing with the beaming visage of Drew Barrymore, whose mug adorns not only the film, but the disc's packaging. All of which is a shame, since Mr. Fenton's work is one of the more interesting of its kind. Those attracted by the admittedly infectious Texas tune will ultimately be affected by Fenton's score for this "Cinderella Story," though.
