Audio Mixer: Adrian VonRipka. Recording information: Brooklyn Bridge Recording Studio, Brooklyn, NY (09/2008-10/2008). Arranger: Jim Black's AlasNoAxis. The fourth release by downtown drummer Jim Black's Alasnoaxis, HOUSEPLANT is--as its name implies--a deceptively unassuming yet still fascinating jazz-rock outing. With saxophonist Chris Speed blowing long, simple lines over a rich chordal foundation provided by guitarist Hilmar Jensson, there are more than a few moments here that recall the autumnal, alternately-tuned jams of Sonic Youth on recent albums like MURRAY STREET and SONIC NURSE. And while the sound also resembles the guitar-saxophone-drum of fellow downtowners the Paul Motian Trio, the impact here is much more visceral, trading the Motian trio's woozy chromatic impressionism for something with a bit more punch. This is jazz rock which implicitly respects the rock side of the equation. Jim Black Houseplant Songs Houseplant Review

Recording information: Magic Shop, New York, NY (09/26/2003-09/28/2003). Unknown Contributor Role: Jim Black. Arranger: Jim Black's AlasNoAxis. Well, this is the third album from Black's group AlasNoAxis, and if listeners haven't heard this project before and are coming to it from any of the other projects these players have been associated with, they're likely to be a bit confused. The reason is that despite their chops and their backgrounds, this isn't really a jazz album. It's a rock album, but they use a horn player instead ...

Houseplant
$19.79 Personnel: Brandon Seabrook (acoustic guitar, electric guitar, banjo); Peter Rende (pedal steel guitar, Fender Rhodes piano, pump organ); R.J. Miller (drums). Audio Mixer: Peter Rende. Liner Note Author: Jeremy Udden. Alto saxophonist Jeremy Udden's second CD as a leader represents a circuitous route from his roots to the world at large and back. His debut recording, Torchsongs, following a fruitful stint as a lead soloist for the Either/Orchestra, featured music written while Udden suffered from severe vertigo. After recovering and doing some touring, he hearkened back to his suburban Boston roots, and Plainville (the actual name of the town he grew up in) inspired the writing that comprises this recording. Where his previous band was made up of handpicked all-stars, this group is made up of emerging modern jazz peers, including keyboardist and producer Pete Rende, string player Brandon Seabrook, bassist Eivind Opsvik, and drummer R.J. Miller. The rural quality of Plainville is depicted in the music, a folk-jazz amalgam that retains a contemporary sound due to electric guitar inserts and a current, smart-style, beat-flavored funk, though the sounds are not dependent on a heavy ...
