Standard Screen; Soundtrack English; Sensormatic; Blue Ray HD-DVD With the release of Robert Altman's M*A*S*H in 1970, a new form of comedy was born, one that would help to forever change the face of cinema. Altman's audacious film reflected the American counterculture's growing distrust of religion and government in the late 1960s and early 1970s, resulting in one of the biggest box office smashes of its time. Introducing the techniques he would employ throughout his storied career--overlapping dialogue, a constantly moving camera with a heavy amount of zooming, and a bold combination of frank subject matter with cynical humor--Altman immediately vaulted himself to Hollywood's upper ranks. Based on the novel by Richard Hooker, M*A*S*H follows a group of Mobile Army Surgical Hospital officers as they perform surgery and pass the time just miles from the front lines of the Korean conflict. Led by sardonic captains "Hawkeye" Pierce (Donald Sutherland) and "Trapper" John McIntyre (Elliott Gould), the film has the feel of an absurd three-ring circus. Other characters include the uptight nurse "Hot Lips" O'Houlihan (Sally Kellerman), the confused Major Frank Burns (Robert Duvall), the troubled Captain "Painless" Waldowski (John Shuck), and the simpleminded Captain "Duke" Forrest (Tom Skerritt). Altman's decision to present his film as a series of loosely connected vignettes rather than a traditionally unfolding narrative perfectly captures the freewheeling spirit so unique to early-'70s cinema. Theatrical release: January 25, 1970
M*A*S*H was added to the Library of Congress National Film Registry in 1996.
The film is based on a series of novels by the pseudonymous Dr. Richard Hooker, a real doctor whose tour of duty in Korea served as the basis for the books.
Robert Altman was the 15th choice as director for the film.
At the time of the film's release, M*A*S*H became the 10th highest-grossing film of all time, a feat made all the more impressive because of its low budget.
Altman recruited his teenage son, Mike, to write the lyrics for the film's theme song, "Suicide Is Painless." Altman joked in 1999 that while his son still receives royalty checks for his efforts, Altman never saw any of the proceeds from the hugely successful television series.
The television spin-off was a critical and commercial success for 11 seasons on CBS. However, the series was even further removed from the original source material than the movie was.
Gary Burghoff reprised his role as Radar O'Reilly on the TV series; he was the only actor from the movie to do so. M*A*S*H Quotes/Excerpts: "I wonder how a degenerate person like you could have reached a position of responsibility in the Army Medical Corps."--Hot Lips (Sally Kellerman) to Dago Red (Rene Auberjonois)
"He was drafted."--Dago Red's reply to Hot Lips

M*A*S*H Movie Review Finally Uncut For years I have seen this movie on TV and it is always cut up so badly that you are at a loss as to what is going on sometimes. This uncut DVD was excellant and I enjoyed it immensely.

MASH the movie is funny and hilarious! I think it's one of the funniest and most box-office academy award winning for best screenplay in 1970 of all-time. Donald Sutherland did a good job playing Hawkeye Pierce which was also Alan Alda's character in the TV series. My favorite classic two scenes is when Hawkeye and Frank Burns played by Robert Duvall is trying to eat his oatmeal for breakfast. While Hawkeye talks about the sexual encounter between Frank and Hot Lips Margart Houlahan (Sally Kellerman). Hawkeye gets on Frank's nerves until he keeps on talking about them in bed. Then suddenly Frank punches Hawkeye in the face. When awkeye shout out and says "Frank Has Gone Insanne Or Nuts!" And also where the entire Mash 4077 army military camp pulls up the curtain. Where Margaret is having a shower naked in the private tents. Everyone starts yelling out and clapping by saying this "BRAVO!, "BRAVO!"

Best Film of 1970 I used to think that Five Easy Pieces was the best movie of 1970, but I've come to agree with everybody else that this is a more skillful, more entertaining, more resonant film, and most importantly, it stays with you. Altman's irreverant approach perfectly illustrates the sheer contemptibility of war and those who wage it, without losing sight of the horror undergone by those who fight it. M*A*S*H DVD One of the world's most acclaimed comedies, MASH focuses on three Korean War Army surgeons brilliantly brought to life by Donald Sutherland, Tom Skerritt and Elliott Gould. Though highly skilled and deeply dedicated, they adopt a hilarious, lunatic lifestyle as an antidote to the tragedies of their Mobile Army Surgical Hospital, and in the process infuriate Army bureaucrats. Robert Duvall, Gary Burghoff and Sally Kellerman co-star as a sanctimonious Major, an other-worldly Corporal, and a self-righteous yet lusty nurse.

CD (1977)
M*A*S*H film
$6.09 In the late '60s and early '70s, George Benson bounced back and forth between recording as a featured soloist in an orchestrated ensemble, and as a bandleader who seemed to really enjoy both interacting with his sidemen, and hearing them cut loose. By 1978 he was a star, on the strength of the hit album BREEZIN', release two years before.
WEEKEND IN L.A. is definitely one of Benson's pop albums--he pretty much sticks to vocals on "Down Here on the Ground," for example, not touching his guitar until the final 30 seconds of the tune. Where he does play, he plays well, reprising "Ode to a Kudu" from BEYOND THE BLUE HORIZON, for example, and tossing in a quote from the Gershwins' "I Got Rhythm" during the title cut. The liner notes imply that the live tapes, recorded over two nights at the Roxy, were later enhanced in the studio.
Recorded live at the Roxy, Hollywood, California on September 30 and October 1-2, 1977.
Personnel: George Benson (vocals, guitar); Jorge Dalto (piano, keyboards); Ronnie Foster (keyboards); Phil Upchurch (guitar), Stanley Banks (bass); Harvey Mason (drums); Ralph MacDonald (percussion).
| | Band Last Waltz CDs (2002) Box Set
M*A*S*H review
$40.99 This 4-CD box set of THE LAST WALTZ includes the complete original album, 24 tracks of previously unreleased rehearsals, performances from the show, film, and studio demo tracks. Includes an 80-page booklet.
Additional personnel includes: Neil Young (vocals, acoustic guitar, harmonica); Joni Mitchell (vocals, acoustic guitar); Dr. John (vocals, guitar, piano, conga); Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan, Neil Diamond, Roebuck "Pops" Staples (vocals, guitar); Paul Butterfield (vocals, harmonica); Mavis Staples, Ronnie Hawkins, Muddy Waters, Van Morrison, Bobby Charles (vocals); Stephen Stills, Ron Wood (guitar); Joe "Pinetop" Perkins (piano); Ringo Starr (drums).
The Band's farewell concert was lavishly presented on Thanksgiving night, 1976 at San Francisco's Winterland Ballroom. Originally released as a three-record, 30-song set, it's been expanded to 54 songs spread over four CDs. The concert presented an overview of their entire body of work, with music from most of their albums. They're joined by a series of guests who are all either peers (Van Morrison, Neil Young) and contemporaries or mentors and wsources of inspiration (Ronnie Hawkins, Muddy Waters).
With the exception of Bob Dylan, all of the artists were originally heard performing only one song with accompaniment from the Band. This longer format allows for a further look at what transpired on that night. The live material is also joined by previously unissued studio recordings, including a theme that frames the work as a whole. Additional material also includes a few rehearsal takes, demos for some of the studio tracks, and 15 minutes of jamming with even more guests (Ringo Starr, Stephen Stills). This is not a traditional career overview or hits run-through; rather, it's a celebration of this important ensemble's legacy.
Recorded at Winterland Arena, San Franciso, California; MGM, Culver City, California; Shangri La, Malibu, California; Village Recorders, Los Angeles, California in 1976. Originally released on Wa
| | Cannonball Adderley In San Francisco CD (1959) SACD Hybrid
M*A*S*H DVD
$16.05 Digitally remastered using 20-bit K2 Super Coding System technology.
This is a hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both regular and Super Audio CD players.
Hot on the heels of session work with Miles Davis and his KIND OF BLUE-era group, alto saxophonist Cannonball Adderley recorded this excellent live date with his brother, cornetist Nat Adderley, along with pianist Bobby Timmons, bassist Sam Jones, and drummer Louis Hayes. THE CANNONBALL ADDERLEY QUINTET IN SAN FRANCISCO defined the accessible, yet technically challenging, soul-jazz that Adderley would be associated with for the rest of his career.
The warm, exuberant feel of the quintet is especially evident on the set's two finest tracks--a spirited take on Randy Weston's "Hi-Fly," and on Timmons's swinging "This Here." Two of Adderley's own compositions, "Spontaneous Combustion" and "You Got It!," blend blazing post-bop dexterity with pulsing, infectious blues structures, and pave the way for a funky take on Thelonious Monk's "Straight, No Chaser" (a bonus track on the reissued CD). Both Cannonball and Nat Adderley play with stunning, bluesy brilliance here, while the rhythm section ably anchors the proceedings. Outside of SOMETHING ELSE (Adderley's 1958 masterpiece), IN SAN FRANCISCO may be the saxophonist's defining moment.
Recorded live at The Jazz Workshop, San Francisco, California on October 18 & 20, 1959. Originally released on Riverside (1157). Includes original liner notes by Ralph J. Gleason.
Personnel: Cannonball Adderley (alto saxophone); Nat Adderley (cornet); Bobby Timmons (piano); Sam Jones (bass); Louis Hayes (drums).
| | Moody Blues Every Good Boy Deserves Favour CD (1971) England; SACD Hybrid
M*A*S*H movie DVD
$29.79 This is a hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both regular and Super Audio CD players.
Though this 1971 release was issued at a time of enormous commercial success for the Moody Blues, EVERY GOOD BOY DESERVES FAVOUR contains some of the band's most adventurous music. The band had recently discovered the Moog synthesizer, and its presence is felt on much of the album. The opening "Procession" instantly sets this collection's experimental course, landing like a spacecraft among reams of cascading synthesizer before evolving into a soundscape of cricket chirps, thunderclaps, and tribal chanting. The next three minutes contain one of the most cathartic sonic explorations the band has ever put forth.
Other standout tracks include "After You Came," which features tessellated vocal layering and bluesy guitar work; "Emily," a song that John Lodge wrote for his daughter; and the rapturously symphonic "You Can Never Go Home." Rich, complex, powerful, and beautifully produced, EVERY GOOD BOY DESERVES FAVOUR brings together all of the Moody Blues' best qualities in one album, standing as the culmination of their fine '60s work, and the standard-bearer for the music to come.
Import-only SACD/Hybrid pressing. 2007 digitally remastered digipack edition of this 1971 classic featuring the original stereo mix and the 5.1 Surround Sound mix plus added tracks along with an expansive booklet containing sleeve notes and rare photographs. Features two previously unreleased tracks: 'The Story In Your Eyes' (Original Version) and 'The Dreamer'. 11 tracks total. Decca.
Contains 2 Bonus Tracks.
The Moody Blues: Justin Hayward (vocals, guitar); John Lodge (vocals, bass instrument); Ray Thomas (flute, harmonica); Mike Pinder (keyboards); Graeme Edge (drums, percussion).

M*A*S*H review
$41.05 Based on the Oscar-winning film of the same name, the television drama CRASH follows the lives of a seemingly unconnected group of people living in Los Angeles. At first, none of the very different lives led on screen seem to overlap, from hotshot record producer Ben Cendars (Dennis Hopper) to hair-trigger cop Kenny Battaglia (Ross McCall). But as the underlying tensions between class, race, gender, and politics find their way into everyday situations, it soon becomes apparent that all of these characters are inextricably linked, for better or for worse. This release includes the series' first season.

| | Easy Virtue Blu-ray (2009) Widescreen; Dubbed; Subtitled
M*A*S*H DVD
$33.65 Adapted from a Noel Coward play, EASY VIRTUE is essentially a tale of Old World manners vs. New World freedom. The year is 1929, and John Whitaker (Ben Barnes) has just married a feisty American racecar driver named Larita (Jessica Biel). John is the eldest of the Whitakers--a prim English family--and when he returns home with Larita on his arm, his mother (Kristin Scott Thomas) is none too pleased. John's choice of a loud, brash American has raised everyone's eyebrows, including his sisters, Hilda (Kimberly Nixon) and Marion (Katherine Parkinson). The only person who seems to approve of Larita is Mr. Whitaker--John's weary, put-upon father (Colin Firth). Try as she might, Larita has a hard time impressing the icy, unforgiving Mrs. Whitaker, and indeed, the entire Whitaker clan proves to be a rather eccentric, unhappy bunch. John had promised Larita a short visit, but due to pressure from his mother, they stay longer than planned. Time drags on, and the friction between Mrs. Whitaker and Larita only gets worse. When Hilda digs up something scandalous from Larita's past, tensions bubble to a boiling point, and Larita is forced to face some rather hard truths about herself and her new husband.
For fans of period films, EASY VIRTUE is a visual treat, set on a sprawling country estate and with gorgeous and impeccable costumes. Director Stephan Elliot (THE ADVENTURES OF PRISCILLA, QUEEN OF THE DESERT) tries to inject a bit of modern zing by filling scenes with contemporary renditions of Cole Porter songs, while Biel and Scott Thomas breathe some life into their lightweight characters. Though the source play, with its airy plot, isn't one of Coward's most popular works, fans of Colin Firth's work in costume comedies and dramas will be delighted with the actor's performance here.
