| | Pointer Sisters Priority/Black & White CD Pointer Sisters Discography of CDs
Digitally remastered two-fer from the Soul/R&B favorites, featuring pair of Richard Perry-produced albums on one CD: Priority (1979) and Black & White (1981. Priority contains stunning - and downright ballsy - covers of songs from a veritable pantheon of icons; Bruce Springsteen, The Rolling Stones, Bob Seger, Ian Hunter, The Band, Graham Parker and Richard Thompson. Black & White, a Top Ten album and a true classic, includes the sisters' signature song and smash hit single 'Slow Hand', but that's a mere taster for an album that's "as gritty and funky as it is deep and sensuous". Priority/Black & White album
$11.18 Last time around, Shakira touched upon so many styles she couldn't be contained on one album, splitting Oral Fixation in two. This time, she focuses on one sound only: a pulsating electro-disco that crosses all boundaries and welcomes all nationalities. Such concentration behooves Shakira, freeing her to release her inner She Wolf, a wild wacko who's as coo coo as she is carnal. And for as sexy as Shakira is -- crucially, her music is sexy too -- what really gives She Wolf its bite is her inspired nuttiness, how she laments that Matt Damon's not meant for her, and wishes her ex-lover and his new girl a horrible vacation where the room smells and the toilet doesn't flush. "Darling, it is no joke, this is lycanthropy," she sings on the title track with no small trace of humor, and this blend of cheerful weirdness and sick beats -- often supplied by the Neptunes, delivering tough, sensual rhythms in a way they haven't in a long time, but also John Hill and Wyclef Jean -- is giddily addicting, a celebration of all the strange sensuality that comes out at night. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

| | Luther Vandross This Is Christmas CD (1995)
Priority/Black & White CD music
$6.55 This stellar 1995 Christmas album is not your typical release of holiday standards. In fact, Luther helped pen most of the songs on this album. His originals include the excellent "With a Christmas Heart," "This Is Christmas," and "A Kiss for Christmas." But for those with an allegiance to the standards, "My Favorite Things" and "O' Come All Ye Faithful" are duly included among these 10 lovely tracks. Well-known bassist/arranger/producer Marcus Miller plays on some of the tracks, while well-coifed '80s rock balladeer Richard Marx co-wrote "Every Year, Every Christmas." For R&B fans, it's hard to do much better than THIS IS CHRISTMAS.
Recorded at The Hit Factory Studios, Power Station and Clinton Recording Studios, New York; Camel Island, Los Angeles, California.
Engineers include: Ray Bardani, Stanley Wallace, Paul Brown.
Personnel: Luther Vandross (vocals); Darlene Love (vocals); Paul Jackson, Jr. ...

After a lengthy gap of nearly five years, Jackson had to pull something out of the bag. BAD was, after all, a difficult act to follow, and the press were trying to prove he was bonkers. This was a pretty decent attempt and fell in with the hard dance beat of the early 90s. "Heal The World" was much like the old melodic Jackson, and it became a major hit. "Black Or White" was the best of the rest, a well-constructed song in which he attempted to repeat "Ebony And Ivory" in the context of 90s dance music.
Despite the success of Bad, it was hard not to view it as a bit of a letdown, since it presented a cleaner, colder, calculated version of Thriller -- something that delivered what it should on the surface, but wound up offering less in the long run. So, it was time for a change-up, something even a superstar as huge as Michael Jackson realized, so he left Quincy

$34.34 KEEPING TRADITION was nominated for Best Jazz Vocal Performance in the 37th Annual Grammy Awards.
After performing a wide variety of music (much of it commercial) for 15 years, in the mid-'80s Dee Dee Bridgewater returned to jazz. The highly appealing vocalist, although still involved in theater work and other areas of music, has mostly recorded straight-ahead jazz ever since. KEEPING TRADITION (with her regular French quartet) has Bridgewater exploring and swinging some of her favorite standards, making such veteran songs as "Just One of Those Things," "What Is This Thing Called ...
