Christophe Willem scores again with the unreservedly danceable Cafeine -- the follow-up to his solid 2007 debut, Inventaire. The golden boy of Nouvelle Star's fourth season (France's version of Pop Idol) is irresistibly upbeat, and that makes for one fun album. While the majority of the tracks are in Willem's native French, he goes the route of his first effort and throws in a few songs in English. He teamed up with pop vixen Kylie Minogue for the sexy single "Sensitized," which stands out as just another sure hit among the others that have already charted in Europe. Cafeine is pure Euro-pop through and through -- and a perfect bet for those frivolous days when deep lyrics and melancholy just won't do. ~ Celeste Rhoads

| | La Cumbiamba Eneye Marioneta CD (2006)
Cafeine album
$18.99 Although its native music is not as well known outside of its borders as that of Brazil, Colombia, the fourth largest country in South America, hosts a wide array of folkloric styles (cumbia, vallenato, bambuco, and others) that reflect its potpourri of subcultures. La Cumbiamba eNeYé's core members are New York-based Colombian transplants who draw from and expand upon that nation's varied rural and coastal traditions, fusing it all together into a new entity. The 11-piece band utilizes an array of brass/wind, percussion, and electric instruments -- including several endemic to Colombia -- to stir up a perennial party-in-the-streets atmosphere that flirts with, but never totally embraces, salsa, jazz, and Afro-Cuban elements. The tracks that make the greatest sonic and emotional impact, though, are the minimalist, rawer slices of hybridized local music. The title track, "Marioneta," "Encarnación," and several others rely on drum power and airy gaita flutes to re-create the soul of the streets, while "Marimbita 'e Chonta" brings a marimba up front to provide coloring for Nilko Andreas Guarin's vocal. "Descsderada," on the other hand, finds a home somewhere between New Orleans marching band and Cuban son that's irresistible in every way. ~ Jeff Tamarkin
La cumbiamba ‘eNeYé’ is an ensemble that performs concerts and workshops with traditional instruments from the African Diaspora in Colombia, as well as indigenous and European. All of which are blended together in the traditional musical styles that developed throughout the colonial era, and continue to evolve. ‘eNeYé’ has the range of versatility to perform from a quintet format, for reduced space events; up to a 10-piece band format for large events. La cumbiamba ‘eNeYé’ was created in the summer of 2000 with a group of musicians of caliber who share an enthusiasm for investigating, performing and advancing musical expressions emanating from the mix of African, Native Indian, and European cultural contributions in the Americas. La Cumbiamba eNeYé offers two different types of educational programs. Colombian Traditional Music & Dance Workshop and Traditional Colombian Music Master Class. In the Atlantic CoastGaitas y TamboresFrom the Atlantic coast, this style is performed with pre-Columbian woodwind native indigenous instruments along with the maraca. In this powerful musical style developed and cultivated throughout the colonial and post-colonial eras until present, drums from the African Diaspora blend as two peas in a pot with the ...
