Faith, Hope And Everthing Else album
$13.35 With most contemporary country artists, you could guarantee that a song called "American Ride" would be a slice of jingoism, but Toby Keith isn't like most country singers. His "American Ride" casts a cynical eye at desperate housewives and wannabe pop stars, not celebrating down-home values but wondering where we're all headed on this American Ride at the end of the 2000s, a sentiment not all that far removed from some of Keith's previous social commentary, which makes it a mild surprise that it is the only song here that doesn't come from his own pen. As superb and striking as it is, it's not necessarily a good keystone for the rest of the record, which does have a few tougher ...

Faith, Hope And Everthing Else music CDs
$15.99 RCA/Legacy's 2006 release The Essential Jim Reeves is a repackaged reissue of BMG Heritage's 2003 compilation Anthology, containing a different title and cover art, but bearing the same 40 tracks and annotation. There has been no shortage of Jim Reeves compilations over the years, ranging from cheap budget-line collections to Bear Family's absurdly comprehensive 16-CD set, Welcome to My World. In between those two ...

| | David Jacobs-Strain Ocean Or A Teardrop CD (2004)
Faith, Hope And Everthing Else songs
$12.85 Already established as a major young figure in the blues, David Jacobs-Strain widens his horizons a bit with this album. Blues remains at the roots, but in some cases, such as the adventurous "Earthquake" or the lyrical "Illinois," it's a little obscured by the branches overhead. That's not to say he's entirely turning his back on what begat him: there are splendid versions of songs by Blind Willie Johnson and Mississippi Fred McDowell here, while ...
| | Lee Ann Womack There's More Where That Came From CD (2005)
Faith, Hope And Everthing Else album
$12.59 Though Lee Ann Womack's voice has always betrayed the influence of 1960s and '70s country music, prior to THERE'S MORE WHERE THAT CAME FROM, her albums often concentrated on sophisticated Nashville pop-country. The vintage-style soft-focus cover photo and faux record dust jacket here, however, immediately signal a change of direction.
From the opening honky-tonk fiddle notes of the title track, it's clear that this disc is a conscious nod to the spirit of classics by Dolly Parton, Tammy Wynette, and Loretta Lynn. Throughout the album, Womack's expressive vocals are backed by careening steel guitars and sweet piano licks, which seem to flow straight from the spirit hands of the late Nashville great Floyd Cramer. Though many of these songs deal with contemporary subject matter, they are treated with a gravity that is purely old-fashioned. "I May Hate Myself in the Morning" and "Twenty Years and Two Husbands Ago" take stark and honest looks ...
