| | Halford III: Winter Songs CD (2009) Special Edition; Digipak
Waking Into Nightmares
$13.58 At first glance, Halford's entry into the crowded holiday market looks like a parody. Heavy metal and Christmas make for strange bedfellows, and WINTER SONGS' pastoral cover art -- which depicts Rob Halford staring wistfully (with a goatee and shades) into a soft, snowy pine forest -- screams Spinal Tap. That said, the Judas Priest frontman approaches yuletide standards like "We Three Kings" and "What Child Is This?" with the same conviction that he applied to Priest classics like "Electric Eye" and "Freewheel Burning" -- it probably helps that most traditional Christmas hymns tend to fall into the same brooding minor keys ...

| | Lita Ford Wicked Wonderland CD (2009) Bonus Tracks
Waking Into Nightmares
$14.19 Though former Runaways guitarist Lita Ford has been absent from the recording industry since 1997, she hasn't exactly been idle. After releasing Kiss Me Deadly, her final album after a string of them in the '80s and '90s, the music scene -- and the industry with it -- changed, and alternative ruled the airwaves. Ford got married to Jim Gillette, former vocalist with hair metal rockers Nitro, and started a family. In addition, she relocated to the Caribbean. Wicked Wonderland is uncharacteristic of the pop-metal she released a decade ago. It's an in-your-face metal record, but ultimately it's a very studied and calculated 21st century pop-metal record. It's an album with explicit sexual content, examining S&M, bondage, power exchanges, and all manner of kink and crave in lyrics, words, and sleeve images. Ford wrote all of these songs with her co-producers Greg Hampton and Gillette. Gillette is also either a duet partner or backing vocalist on every track here. Hampton handles bass, keyboard, and other sonic duties, and there are a pair of drummers who alternate in Chris Collier and Stet Howland. The album's first single (and longest track), "Bed," was released exclusively to Stockroom.com, one of the leading suppliers of S&M and bondage gear on the internet. Ford claims that she and her husband have carved out a path to a happy family life, and it does seem that they detail it on this recording. Musically, while Wicked Wonderland is harder, edgier, darker, and more visceral than anything she's released in the past, this is still a very pop-oriented heavy music recording. The songs have hooks as well as blazing guitars and triple-time drumbeats, ...

| | Ted Nugent CD (1975) Remastered
Waking Into Nightmares
$6.75 Digitally remastered by Vic Anesini (Sony Music Studios, New York, New York).
Ted Nugent's self-titled 1975 debut solo release is a bold expression of gonzo guitarist's sound, image, and abundant attitude. Ted had what was essentially a touring band with Amboy Dukes bassist Rob Grange, fellow Michiganite Derek St. Holmes on vocals and guitar, and Cliff Davies on drums. During days off from the mega-road trip that preceded this album, the group recorded its first record. Co-produced by famed hard-rock/metal helmsman Tom Werman, "Stranglehold" has the impromptu jamming feel of a live show.
Like "Deuce" for Kiss, the first track of a first album can define an act. "Stranglehold" leads straight into the no-holds-barred "Stormtroopin'," where the riffs are non-stop. The boogieish "Hey Baby" shows why St. Holmes was an underrated, soulful hard-rock vocalist. He howls "got me an overdose of rock & roll" on "Just What the Doctor Ordered." A wicked metal lick introduces "Snakeskin Cowboys." Ted picks his mammoth Gibson Birdland to death on "Motor City Madhouse." He switches gears on the bluesy shuffle of "You Make Me Feel Right at Home." The bonus live tracks of "Stormtroopin'," "Just What the Doctor Ordered," and especially "Motor City Madhouse" show why any rock & roll fan should witness a Ted Nugent show.
Recorded at the Sound Pit, Atlanta, Georgia. Includes liner notes by Gary Graff.
Reissue producer: Bruce Dickinson.
Personnel: Ted Nugent (vocals, guitar, percussion); Derek St. Holmes (vocals, ...
| | Wilco Being There Vinyl LP (1996)
Waking Into Nightmares
$41.75 Wilco's second album is a sprawling collection of songs--19 of them on 2 CDs--about the rock and roll life and the price you pay to live it. A second album may seem a bit early to be getting into this sort of thing, but Wilco knows the life well; singer-songwriter Jeff Tweedy and most of his bandmates had been on the road for years before with their underground country band Uncle Tupelo. Wilco rocks harder than Uncle Tupelo, and Tweedy's songs, which continue a theme previously explored by road warriors from Grand Funk Railroad to Paul Westerberg, offer a variety of characters and scenarios from that road.
From the struggling Floridian rocker who can't figure out why no one will come to hear his band (the Stones-inspired "Monday") to the lonely fan who lives through his idol's exploits (the gorgeous "The Lonely 1"), to that first taste of star treatment ("Hotel Arizona"), Tweedy captures these stories with grace and elegance. Despite all this introspection, Wilco hasn't forgotten how to rock. "Monday" truly burns, and "I Got You (At The End Of The Century)" has the guitar-driven, big rock sound of Wilco's debut. There's also plenty of the country-rock that put Uncle Tupelo on the map. The smooth lilt of "Far, Far Away" and "Someday Soon" offer quite a contrast to the thrashing, distortion-laden songs that precede them.
Recorded at Chicago Recording Co. and Warzone Recorders, Chicago, Illinois; The Studio, Springfield, Missouri; Moonshine Studios, Atlanta, Georgia.
