EATS DARKNESS represents an exciting departure for Apostle of Darkness leader Andrew Whiteman. Where previous efforts thrived off of an organic, live band feel, and drew from influences as varied as Cuban son, '80s indie rock, and Colombian cumbia, EATS DARKNESS features burbling electronic soundscapes and synthetic percussion. Whiteman's virtuosic, Latin-inflected guitar work remains the one constant binding this record to predecessors like FOLKLORIC FEEL and NATIONAL ANTHEM OF NOWHERE. For the most part however, EATS DARKNESS feels like the work of an inspired but restless artist eager to break away from his trademark sound.
Personnel: Andrew Whiteman (vocals, guitar, tres, keyboards, loops); Julian Brown (vocals, guitar, keyboards, bass instrument); Lisa Lobsinger (vocals); Dean Stone (drums, percussion, loops).
CMJ - "[A] heady mix of songs that blend conceptual, experimental tracks with simple ones that focus on the creation of solid beats." Pitchfork (Website) - "EATS DARKNESS rocks harder than prior work, with crisper edges, while feeling more playful and adventurous." Eats Darkness album
$11.19 Often, supergroups wind up dominated by one particular personality - think Eric Clapton in Derek & the Dominos, Jack White in the Raconteurs -- which makes the egalitarianism of Them Crooked Vultures all the more remarkable. Of course, when it comes down to it, it's a group of three natural-born collaborators: John Paul Jones, the old studio pro who gravitated toward provocative partners after Led Zeppelin's demise, teaming up with R.E.M. as easily as he did with avant-queen Diamanda Galas and nu-folkster Sara Watkins; Dave Grohl, who hopped into an empty drummer's chair whenever the opportunity presented itself; and Josh Homme, who set up a mini-empire based entirely on jam sessions. If Them Crooked Vultures brings to mind Homme's projects more than Grohl's or Jones', it's largely due to his role as lead vocalist and how guitar can push a rhythm section as powerful as this to the side, dominating with its grinding riffs and solos. Homme's predilection for precision does reign supreme -- when the group stretches out, even wallowing in the murk on "Interlude with Ludes," there's the sense that, like a great improv troupe, ...
| | Rosanne Cash List CD (2009)
Eats Darkness CD music
$11.99 After the dark and chilling themes of 2006's BLACK CADILLAC, which saw Rosanne Cash dealing with the deaths of her mother, Vivian Liberto, her father, Johnny Cash, and her stepmother, June Carter Cash -- all of whom passed within a two-year span -- one might assume that her next project would move into an even deeper level of bleakness, but with THE LIST, it's immediately clear that she has instead found a more measured place to stand. It's a lovely and redemptive outing that looks back to go forward. When Cash turned 18, her father, alarmed that his daughter only knew the songs that were getting played on the radio, gave her a list of what he considered 100 essential American songs; Cash kept that list, and now she's drawn on it for this wonderfully nuanced outing that brims with a kind of redemptive timelessness. THE LIST is a renewal and a testament to life, and it belongs to her father as much as it belongs to her, a beautiful restatement of her father's passions, only now, they've become his daughter's treasures, as well. It's an affirming ...

Eats Darkness album
$47.94 Recorded live at Madison Square Garden, New York, New York on November 27-28, 1969.
Returning to the American concert scene after a three-year layoff, the Rolling Stones recorded GET YER YA-YA'S OUT! during a triumphant two-date stand at Madison Square Garden in late November 1969 that found B.B. King and Ike & Tina Turner opening for them. Having amassed an impressive recorded output during their three years away from touring, the Stones peppered their sets with hits, including "Honky Tonk Women," "Jumpin' Jack Flash," and "Street Fighting Man." Tipping their collective hats to Chuck Berry, the band also included covers of "Carol" and "Little Queenie" alongside more blues-influenced numbers such as "Stray Cat Blues" and "Love In Vain."
Having been a member of John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, new guitarist Mick Taylor parlayed his experience into some impressive slide guitar work. The pièce-de-resistance of what is arguably the best live ...

| | Turbulence Truth CD (2003)
Eats Darkness music CDs
$9.29 On his fourth album (and his first for the venerable American RAS label), Turbulence once again shows himself to be the most interesting and complex reggae singer of the militant Bobo Dread school. He also avoids the most bitter excesses of the Bobo Dread rhetoric (though the album includes, inevitably, a song titled "Fire Bun") and incorporates elements of unabashedly wide-eyed romance into many of his songs. Case in point: the sweet-tempered "What I Want," a song with the disarmingly strange title "Saturate Yourself in My Arms," and the slightly less disarming but not quite off-putting macho strut of "Addicted." As always, Turbulence's producer and mentor, Philip "Fatis" Burrell, provides a rich variety of top-notch rhythms, from the straight digital one-drop of "What I Want" to the rough and raw stutter-step dancehall of "Fire Bun" and the swinging, faintly R&B-flavored "Been Good to Me." And as always, Turbulence makes the most of his rather strange-sounding voice, ...
