Issued in 2009, SLAVES OF THE WORLD, the follow-up to VERMIN, finds the Norwegian act Old Man's Child working more of its black-metal magic. Fronted by singer/multi-instrumentalist Galder, also of the mighty Dimmu Borgir, OMC excels at ominous, guitar-laden tunes, as best revealed on "Saviours of Doom" and "Unholy Foreign Crusade."
Recording information: Studio Fredman, Gothenburg, Sweden (09/08/2008-09/27/2008).
Photographer: Stephanie Cabral.
Personnel: Galder (vocals, guitars, keyboards, bass instrument); Peter Wildoer (drums).
Audio Mixers: Henrik Udd; Fredrik Nordström ; Henrik Udd.
Kerrang (Magazine) (p.56) - "Wildoer's contribution is invaluable, blasting like a high pressure hose when called for but also providing a rock solid spine when the songs hit deeper grooves..." Slaves Of The World album
$13.15 First, the disclaimer: California's Disgorge -- the band heard on Parallels of Infinite Torture -- should not be confused with Mexico's Disgorge. Nor should the Californians be confused with Swedish and Norwegian bands that are also called Disgorge. But it isn't hard to understand why someone might confuse California's Disgorge with Mexico's Disgorge. Both were formed in the '90s -- California's Disgorge in 1992, Mexico's Disgorge in 1994 -- and both have been loyal to the grindcore style of death metal associated with Carcass, Cannibal Corpse, and Cancer. Further, California's Disgorge have had some Latino members. Play Parallels of Infinite Torture right after hearing Forensick (an album by Mexico's Disgorge), and it is clear that the two bands are quite similar -- which isn't to say that they're identical. There are subtle differences between them. For one thing, Mexico's Disgorge have favored sick, twisted song titles that mirror Carcass' medical themes; their list of song titles reads like a medical textbook, whereas on Parallels of Infinite Torture, California's Disgorge go for song titles that are very occult-minded. ...

$14.65 | | Arch Enemy Stigmata CD (1998) Bonus Tracks; Reissue; Remastered; Deluxe Edition
Slaves Of The World CD music
$13.39 The vehicle through which death metal guitar hero Michael Amott channeled his most extreme instrumental concepts, Arch Enemy was an experiment that produced predictably wild and undeveloped results. After the group's debut, Black Earth, shocked and amazed many fans of the Gothenburg sound, Arch Enemy signed with indie metal powerhouse Century Media and released Stigmata in 1998. As often happens with highly anticipated follow-ups, Stigmata disappointed some fans with what some called a more restrained sound and lesser material. Realistically, the tightly constructed production was to be expected, and the real driving force behind Arch Enemy's success -- Amott's guitar work -- is definitely present. On the negative side, vocalist Johan Liiva doesn't do much except stay out of the way, and the addition of Peter Wildoer on drums (in place of Daniel Erlandsson) doesn't help either. Perhaps confirming the band's critics, Arch Enemy asked Erlandsson to return for its next release, Burning Bridges. These problems are really minor when balanced against Amott's massive playing and songwriting, so while Stigmata is a fraction off from the band's debut form, Arch Enemy still delivers some nice melodic death metal on the sophomore effort.
