Cara's legal battles with former record label Network were far from over when she released her first (and only) album for Elektra in 1987. This pressure evidently affected her output for the worse during this period, as the material here lacks the vocal and musical conviction of her first two albums. The pretentious, '60s-cloned "Girlfriends" is one of a handful of empty uptempo cuts. And the Michael Bolton/Doug James ballad, "Now That It's Over," never quite reaches its destination, with Cara struggling to hit the song's higher notes and only seeming to be halfway into the rest of the song. Likewise, "Be Your Number One" has a catchy refrain, but it feels like nothing's happening during the verses. With only halfway decent songs, limited production, and Cara vocally not up to par, this album will only be of interest to the true Cara conoisseur. ~ Justin M. Kantor

Carasmatic music CDs
$13.89 GO was the most satisfying of Mario's first three albums, but it lacked a major crossover single on the level of "Let Me Love You." Although the sensitive ballad "Crying Out for Me" was big on R&B stations, it did not break the Top 30 of the Hot 100. The minimal Sean Garrett and Shondrae production "Break Up," however--D.N.A.'s lead single, issued weeks before the album--did not take long to become the singer's biggest pop hit since his ...
| | From the Roots: The Jimmy Castor Story CD (1970)
Carasmatic songs
$13.35 Before the Jimmy Castor Bunch produced the 1972 hit "Troglodyte (Caveman)", the Jimmy Castor Group struggled to find a following in the dance halls of N.Y.C. Given their initial big break by Paul Winley, the group performed in social clubs and the occasional gig at the Audubon Ballroom, mixing their personal brand of soul/rhythm & blues with jazz horn charts and female back-up singers. Vocalist/saxophonist Castor was a poor man's James Brown, very similar to peers Little Anthony & The Imperials, and produced this album in 1969 that has now been issued on CD. Though the band had raw edges due to their lack of seat time in the studio, Castor and his large ensemble produced an enjoyable music good for the times, as boogaloo and go-go was emerging. From The Roots is retro-soul to the max, from the light groove of "Soul Sister" to the talkin' shout out, shaking tune "Rattlesnake," the scolding soul blues parallel to a Wilson Pickett or Otis Redding "It's What You Give," or the downhearted, guitar shanked "Poor Loser". As this group was built for getting down, the rough but faster beat of "It's OK," or "Block Party" with its carefree attitude, identifies the style that made this combo eventually ...
