Led by Norwegian guitarist Ronni Le Tekro, this band mixes up several styles of hard rock and pop metal. TNT is OK as these bands go, but nothing much stands out from either the songwriting or the music. Realized Fantasies is well done, but passionless. ~ Steven McDonald

| | Axel Rudi Pell Tales Of The Crown CD (2008)
Realized Fantasies songs
$13.65 Some artists make a conscious effort to change with the times; others reason that "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." German guitarist Axel Rudi Pell is clearly of the latter mindset, which is probably just as well because even though his albums can be quite predictable, they are generally solid. Tales of the Crown is no exception; this 2008 release is totally oblivious to metal trends of the late 2000s, but that doesn't prevent every one of the tracks from being pleasingly solid. The only thing that lets you know this is a 2008 release is the release date; stylistically, melodic but hard-rocking tracks such as "Angel Eyes" (not to be confused with the old Matt Dennis standard), "Buried Alive," and "Riding on an Arrow" are firmly planted in the 1970s and 1980s. Old-school headbangers like Ronnie James Dio, Rainbow, Deep Purple, and UFO continue to inspire Pell creatively, and he makes no effort to update his approach. Again, that is probably for the best; as predictable as Tales of the Crown is, Pell never sounds bored or uninspired. Quite the contrary -- he sounds like he gets a lot of pleasure from his 1970s/1980s comfort zone. And once again, former Hardline frontman Johnny Gioeli comes through for Pell. Gioeli still sounds a lot like Jon Bon Jovi, but none of the material on ...

Realized Fantasies album
$13.29 Nine long years since their last studio album of new material (1999's THE GATHERING), Testament returned with a brutally melodic set fittingly titled THE FORMATION OF DAMNATION. Vocalist Chuck Billy's winning battle with cancer inspired most of the group's original lineup to reconvene, with the exception of the ever-changing ...

| | Hand To Hand Design The End/Follow The Horizon CD (2009)
Realized Fantasies album
$10.69 Fighting stubbornly against the dwindling popularity of 2000s-flavored emo/screamo (while claiming all the while to sound "utterly original"), Orlando, FL's Hand to Hand spend the bulk of 2009's Design the End/Follow the Horizon regurgitating well-worn clichés. (And what's with those twin titles? Did the bandmembers stitch two EPs together, or simply fail to make up their minds?) Sure, Hand to Hand possess sound musical chops and the necessary arrangement acumen to operate comfortably within this genre's wildly divergent emotional extremes, ranging from quasi-metallic onslaughts for the boys to sensitive pop-punk melodies for the girls, as well as that dual vocalist schtick: one emo, one screamo. But so what? So can every other group of musically hip, post-teen musicians from their generation...heck, even Christians can do this stuff! Not to get hysterical here, and in Hand to Hand's defense, this album does show them moving away from a few tired gimmicks like songs with goofy titles that have nothing in common with their lyrics (only "Last Saturday Was Way Better" and "I Drew a Portrait in Philly" raise red flags), while embracing a few different strokes as heard in the riff-heavy, album-closing ...
