| | Franz Ferdinand Blood CD Franz Ferdinand Discography of CDs
While Franz Ferdinand's third full-length outing found the Scottish alt-rockers swapping some of their trademark post-punk bluster for sleek electro-dance beats, few would have predicted the band's next move would be a full on Jamaican dub-style remix of said album. But that is precisely what is offered on BLOOD, a studio-crafted companion to the band's early-2009 release, TONIGHT. Working with producer Dan Carey (whose production credits include reggae icons Lee "Scratch" Perry and Mad Professor), the group's meticulously placed rhythms and careening keyboards bounce vigorously in a virtual space. Daubed in washes of reverb and delay, and often stripped down to just a riff and a beat, the reinterpretations intensify the bass and inject a sense of space into the arrangements, recalling Mad Professor's similar turn of Massive Attack's classic album, PROTECTION.Rolling Stone (p.82) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "'Feel the Pressure' loops a sexy Alex Kapranos proclamation over booming Chemical Brothers-style beats..." Blood album
$14.75 BLACK SOUNDS OF FREEDOM was originally released on LP in 1977 under the title LOVE CRISIS.
This record is Black Uhuru's first album (though a few very rare singles appeared prior) and is produced by the often-overlooked Prince Jammy. Founder Duckie Simpson was seemingly at a loss when Black Uhuru's first incarnation broke up in the early '70s; however, he was subsequently able to convince Michael Rose (aka Mykal Rose) to join the group, which is where the magic began.
BLACK SOUNDS OF FREEDOM has a lush intensity rivaled by few roots LPs. With a strong dub slant to the rhythm tracks, Michael Rose's voice floats effortlessly on emotional tracks such as "Satan Army Band," and the classic "I Love King Selassie." Rose was and continues to be a master of infusing rhythm tracks with a haunting charm that consumes the listener, and is one of the few singers to tackle a Marley tune ("Natural Mystic") without disgracing the original. Sly & Robbie, Earl Lindo and a host of other greats (including the popular roots singer Johnny Osbourne on harmonica) provide the foundation for this classic release. While not as breathtaking ...
| | Black Uhuru Sinsemilla CD (1980) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Blood CD music
$6.99 Only a shade less great than 1981's RED, 1980's SINSEMILLA, Black Uhuru's debut on Island Records, is still mightily impressive. Powered by the songwriting and distinctive, soulful tenor of Michael Rose, and sweetened by the harmonies of Derrick "Duckie" Simpson and Sandra "Puma" Jones (the use of the male/female vocal trio was the group's defining characteristic), Black Uhuru combined roots reggae and hypnotic, almost futuristic grooves. Unlike many roots acts from the '60s and '70s, Black Uhuru wasn't afraid to incorporate keyboard-generated sounds into the mix. Spacey synth accents join earthy rhythms and traditional Rasta themes--Black pride, spiritual uplift, the celebration of marijuana--in a way that is tied to reggae's past, yet sounds totally fresh.
But Black Uhuru's real secret weapon is the presence of Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare, the legendary rhythm section/production duo. As instrumentalists, Sly and Robbie lend incessantly propulsive rhythms to SINSEMILLA, and their production--dark, complex, crisp, and psychedelic ...
| | Ween Friends CD (2007) Extended Play
Blood music CDs
$6.79 After an extended hiatus following the 2003 release of Quebec, Ween eased back into active status in the summer of 2007 with the release of the Friends EP through their independent Chocodog Records. Friends acts as a tonic to whatever lingering bad vibes Quebec left behind -- it's hard to shake the despair of "If You Could Save Yourself You Could Save Us All" from the memory -- as it's a relentlessly bright, knowingly cheerful EP, particularly on its pulsating neon-disco title track, designed as an ironic soundtrack to a gay disco and containing just about every color in the homo rainbow, to borrow their own words. It's not the only time Ween plays with homoerotica here, as the EP is bookended by "Slow Down Boy," a soulful slice of unrequited love that isn't quite a joke, no matter how much Gene savors the line "lay back and let him blow you away." Between those two songs are the cold, driving electro-rock of "I Got to Put the Hammer Down," one their best songs in years; the playful reggae epic "King Billy," lasting almost too long at five minutes; and "Light Me Up," a drug-dealing saga set to a bossa nova beat that recalls Joe Jackson as much as it recalls Marc Anthony. What these five songs have in common is that they're lighter on their feet than the Quebec material, and it reconnects Ween to the devilish humor of their best '90s work, along with the excellent songwriting that's always been their backbone. If they can keep this up for a full album, they'll have a fine comeback on their hands, but the Friends EP should be enjoyed on its own for its bright blast of song, ...

| | Orb BBC Sessions 1989-2001 CDs (2008)
Blood album
$15.99 The proliferation of electronica artists throughout the 1990s and 2000s may make it easy to lose sight of the genre's founding fathers, but this compilation of the Orb's BBC sessions, recorded between 1989 and 2001, will rectify that mistake. Forerunners of IDM and ambient house, the Orb's pulsating, psychedelic grooves were tremendously influential, thanks in part to the support of John Peel, who recorded several excellent sessions with the group over the years.
The two-disc set opens with the 20-minute track "A Huge Ever Growing Pulsating Brain That Rules from the Center of the Underworld (Loving You)" is a highlight, but classics like "Back Side of the Moon" and their signature "Little Fluffy Clouds" also stand out. ...
