Standard Screen; Additional Footage; Soundtrack English; Soundtrack French; Soundtrack Spanish; English Subtitles Based on the novel by James Ellroy, Brian De Palma's THE BLACK DAHLIA stars Josh Hartnett and Aaron Eckhart as a pair of LAPD detectives assigned to the most notorious murder in Hollywood history. De Palma takes things slow, spending a good 20 minutes establishing the relationship between Buddy Bleichert, Lee Blanchard, and their mutual love Kay (Scarlett Johanssen), before introducing the 1947 murder after which the film is named. In the haunting screen-tests left behind after her mysterious death, aspiring actress Elizabeth Short appears to want fame so badly she'll do anything to get it. Her pornographic film appearances, and a rumored affair with narcissist heiress Madeleine Linscott (Hillary Swank), provide just two clues in a sea of confusion.
THE BLACK DAHLIA crams every subplot from Ellroy's novel into two hours, but only connects them towards the end of the movie. The screen-tests featuring a sadly desperate Elizabeth Short (Mia Kirshner) are captivatingly filmed in gritty black-and-white. These scenes succeed in showing the industry ugliness most likely behind Elizabeth's death, while the rest of the film self-consciously strives to be noir through elaborate set design, dramatic camera angles, and narration taken straight from the book. If De Palma's goal was to make us examine our own voyeuristic fascination with murder, particularly the gruesome murder of a beautiful young woman, then he succeeds, because throughout a film invested in so many different storylines, Short's remains the most interesting one. Black Dahlia Movie Review CSI in 1939! Not very memorable. Submitted by steven.west (Pelham, AL USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No This review is for a different format.
Part Hack Job, Part Fever Dream, All Eye Candy. This film is pretty to look at. It's also entertaining. However, it's not genius. It's based on a book by the same title by James Ellroy which IS genius. The director starts out strong, the acting is great, the sound and cinematography are beautiful..... But then it falls on its face. It seems the director chopped out fairly large chunks of the story and then created other parts whole cloth to make it end in somthing resembling two hours. That's too bad. If he had stuck to the story line and developed the film to follow the book more closely, I'd feel different. Or maybe if I'd never read the book, I would have thought it was great. As it stands, it disappoints, although it does do it prettily. Submitted by Arthur (Seattle, Wa. US and A) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No This review is for a different format.
I Like it It's interesting but only the part of the dahlia the part of the police (josh Hartnett) it's so bad but it's a good movie and the final wow it's so good watch it Submitted by sim911 (zac, zac , mex) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No This review is for a different format.
Not What I Expected.... The movie wasn't really about the Black Dahlia case, it was kinda based around it, but it followed the story of fictional characters. The movie did have a good cast though, like Scarlett Johansson and Hilary Swank. Also the sexy Rose McGowan makes a small appearance. A waste of time and money The Black Dahlia is a film that is not even about what it's suppose to be about so don't let the title fool you.The film is really about these two fighters turned cops who become friends, but one of them goes insane and loses his girlfriend. The film moves at such a rapid pace so you don't even know what's going on and the Black Dahlia's murder is something that just happens and it's overshadowed by the boring romance between Hartnett and Johansson. The performances by Johansson,Eckhart,Swank, and Hartnett are good, but the characters and their backgrounds are so overdone.Bottom Line:keep your distance from the Black Dahlia because it's this year's biggest stink-bomb. | | Beatles - A Hard Day's Night DVDs (1964)
Black Dahlia review
$10.49 A HARD DAY'S NIGHT presents a fictionalized day in the life of the Beatles as they give a performance on a live television show. Filmed just a month after their appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show in February 1964, this film--the Beatles' first--introduces us to the unique personalities of each member of the band. The film opens with the Fab Four boarding a train mobbed with adoring young fans (mostly women) as they attempt to travel to the television studio in London. The antics of the band during rehearsals and makeup application provide a large part of the comic material in this feature, though there are other moments of pure hilarity. The unscripted vignette featuring a hangover-suffering Ringo is especially funny, particularly when he is arrested and risks having to miss the broadcast. None of this goes unnoticed by the director of the show, played by Victor Spinetti, who went on to become a recurring cast member in Beatles movies. As the clock ticks away dramatically, our heroes manage to free Ringo from jail and sneak onto the stage in the nick of time, delighted in the knowledge that they have nearly driven the director mad in the process. Arguably the first music video ever made, this faux documentary and its shooting style have been a tremendous influence on nearly every rock and roll feature since.

| | American Experience - Alexander Hamilton DVD (2007) Widescreen
Black Dahlia review
$17.25 Though he never became president, Alexander Hamilton nonetheless remains one of the most important and influential of the Founding Fathers. A self-made man who rose above the stigma of his illegitimate birth, Hamilton served in the Revolutionary War, cowrote the Federalist Papers, created the first American political party, and, as the first Secretary of the Treasury, established a national monetary system that laid the foundation for a strong federal government. Yet Hamilton's life was not without adversity: his numerous extramarital affairs provoked public scandal, and his bitter feud with political rival Aaron Burr climaxed in an infamous duel that would result in his death. Utilizing archival material, dramatic recreations, and interviews with historians, this episode of PBS's AMERICAN EXPERIENCE series explores the life and work of this complex, but often underestimated, Founding Father.

| | Fairy Queen - Purcell - English National Opera DVD (1995)
Black Dahlia DVD
$22.75 A filmed record of the beautifully designed production of THE FAIRY QUEEN performed in 1995 at the English National Opera, this two-hour opera is sure to enchant. The performances and staging wonderfully capture the ephemeral and magical mood of the opera, which is loosely based on Shakespeare's wonderful comedy "A Midsummer Night's Dream." Richard Van Allan and Yvonne Kenny are featured performers.
The Fairy Queen is regarded as typical of the hybrid genre of the English Restoration period, drawing upon the traditions of the Elizabethan theatre and at the same time the conventions of the courtly masque. This new production was first staged by the English National Opera (ENO) in 1995 and received enthusiastic acclaim from both the press and public.
