| | U2 No Line On The Horizon CD (2009)
Shine On songs
$10.49 There's no shortage of legendary producers in line to work with music world titans U2; when work with Rick Rubin broke off, Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois stepped in. The resulting NO LINE ON THE HORIZON, 2009's offering from the Irish rockers, continues in the grand U2 tradition, as soaring pop anthems like opening single "Get on Your Boots" pair with experimental melanges like "Tripoli," on a striking album featuring touches of all the albums come before, yet hinting at new worlds for Bono to conquer.
After spending the 1990s experimenting with electronic music and returning to arena-ready rock during the first few years of the 21st century, U2 stakes out territory somewhere between those two points on 2009's NO LINE ON THE HORIZON. Enlisting its go-to production trio of Brian Eno, Daniel Lanois, and Steve Lillywhite, the Irish quartet seems intent on crafting a quirkier companion piece to HOW TO DISMANTLE AN ATOMIC BOMB, and they succeed with restless tracks such as "Get on Your Boots," which sounds like "Vertigo" hijacked by T. Rex, and "Stand Up Comedy," a wiry number that lets the Edge cut loose with barbed guitar lines. Some of most striking songs on HORIZON are the ones that venture farthest from U2's comfort zone, as on the surprisingly weighty title track, a tune that counterbalances its nearly industrial heft with a high-pitched keyboard melody, and, of course, Bono's soaring vocals. Although HORIZON is willfully less accessible than BOMB or ALL THAT YOU CAN'T LEAVE BEHIND, it's no return to ZOOROPA-level obtuseness either, meaning that U2 fans will find plenty ...

| | Erskine Hawkins & His Tuxedo Junction Orchestra CD (2008) (Import)
Shine On music CDs
$11.29 Digitally remastered by Joe Lopes and Jay Newland (September 1991, BMG Recording Studios, New York).
During the Swing era, there were jazz-oriented orchestras and there were the more pop-oriented ones. Occasionally, there was a big band that combined the best of both worlds, playing super-catchy dance tunes but with some dandy jazz soloing as well. Such a band was led by Erskine Hawkins, a fabulous high-note trumpet specialist. While they didn't have that many hits, his band was very popular with jazz and dance fans both, and the Dutton label's 2008 compilation, TUXEDO JUNCTION, with 24 tunes representing the Hawkins band's entire career, is a superb sample ...

| | Beatles Abbey Road CD (1969) Limited Edition; Remastered; Digipak; Enhanced CD
Shine On CD music
$15.29 ABBEY ROAD, recorded in the summer of 1969, was the last album recorded by the Beatles (LET IT BE was released in 1970, but recorded in early '69).
This reissue of ABBEY ROAD has been digitally re-mastered. It comes packaged with replicated original U.K. album art, an expanded booklet containing original and newly written liner notes, and rare photos. Limited quantities of the CD are embedded with a brief documentary film about the album.
After the laborious disorganization and infighting that characterized early 1969's LET IT BE sessions (as famously captured on film), the fractious four were willing to let George Martin take the reins and to work with him as a cohesive unit for the much more succinct production of their (and the decade's) swan song, ABBEY ROAD. The superb performances make the album an artistic high point for all members of the group. Paul McCartney inspired the suite of songs that begins with "You Never Give Me Your Money." Often thought of as two long medleys, the songs that fill most of the second half of ABBEY ROAD segue seamlessly into one another, but ...

| | Lil' Boosie Superbad: The Return Of Boosie Bad Azz CD (2009)
Shine On album
$15.65 Before it was released, Baton Rouge rapper Lil' Boosie explained that SUPERBAD--which on the spine adds the subtitle "The Return of Boosie Bad Azz"--was recorded with the ladies in mind. He explained that women buy product and don't like any "static-ass-burnt CD," but skipping the sexist argument, it is worth noting that SUPERBAD is glammed-out Boosie by design and not some major-label repackaging of a naturally gutter artist. When the opening "My Avenue" declares "All I want is my paper/I don't care what they say," the slick, Runners-produced track gives the album's motivation right off the top. The mixtape Boosie--the darker and more vicious Boosie--is still recognizable on hardcore tracks like "No Mercy" and "Pain" but the bitter "Bullsh*t" is more in line with the rest of the album as it turns disgust into a singalong chorus with a wicked hook. The sugary sweet ballad "Miss Kissin' on You" is the only true dud on this 16-track album which, with the help of some well-chosen guests ...
