Vacant Chair
$8.15 NATURALLY has stood up over the years as a perfect debut. When released in 1971, it introduced J.J. Cale's rootsy, laid back grooves to excellent effect, and in the decades since, this album and its follow-up, REALLY, have remained classics of mellow '70s country-rock. Riding on the success and easy blues feel of Eric Clapton's cover of Cale's "After Midnight," NATURALLY goes even deeper into roots music, concocting a mixture of country, blues, and boogie that is full of downhome goodness while it drips with cool.
Cale's version of "After Midnight" is here, as is his loping "Call Me the Breeze" (later covered by Lynyrd Skynyrd), and the minimal blues "Crazy Mama" (a radio hit for Cale). The music is deceptively tricky--the surface textures pull you in like a porch swing, but the interlocking rhythmic base is full of subtle tugs and pulls that are far from standard-issue slow boogie. A sterling cast of players backs Cale, adding warm tones and ...

$18.49 Return To Summer Lake is Steven's third recording. Special guest artists on the CD include Molly O'Brien, Nina Gerber, Debi Smith, SONiA of Disappear Fear, Pete & Maura Kennedy, Al Petteway & Bruce Molsky. Steven Bio:Billboard Magazine describes Steven Gellman's music as "intensely sensitive and impressively intelligent at the same time". As another reviewer aptly phrased it, Gellman's songs are "Kodak moments" from his life.He often performs in nursing homes and retirement communities, and even used a choir of senior citizens as backup on the track "Almeda at 90" from his album "Photobook". Dick Cerri, President of the World Folk Music Association says "Steve's natural ability on stage enables an audience to not only enjoy the songs and stories, but to participate in the performance."Nowhere is there a better example of how Gellman touches people's lives than the story of fan Jennifer Baker, blind and wheelchair bound from a lifelong struggle with kidney ...

| | John Prine Fair & Square CD (2005) Bonus Tracks
Vacant Chair
$13.35 FAIR & SQUARE's release was highly anticipated by John Prine fans, as the veteran singer/songwriter hadn't recorded an album of new songs in 10 years (the preceding IN SPITE OF OURSELVES was mostly cover tunes). Happily for both Prine and his contingent, FAIR & SQUARE represents that most coveted of phenomena, the Return to Form. Though 1995's LOST DOGS & MIXED BLESSINGS was not without its virtues, some tracks were marred by overproduction. Here, though, the arrangements are scaled back down to Prine's comfort zone, appropriately rootsy to accommodate both the down-home amiability of his tone and the endlessly intriguing twists and turns of his unique lyrical style. While he's not untouched by contemporary events (references to the White House and the war in Iraq crop up), most of the ...

| | Patty Griffin 1000 Kisses CD (2002)
Vacant Chair
$7.99 1000 KISSES was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Contemporary Folk Album.
Patty Griffin's success is either a testament to the eclecticism of the American music-buying public or to the success of the soundtrack to the movie OH BROTHER WHERE ART THOU? 1000 KISSES isn't a great departure for the Boston singer-songwriter--she's still singing the kind of perfectly formed mini-stories that inhabited her debut album, 1996's LIVING WITH GHOSTS. The main difference here is the assurance with which she presents her material--it's spare, sparsely orchestrated, mostly just acoustic guitar and bass, with the accent on her world-weary yet optimistic vocals and lyrics, eschewing the rock accompaniment of her previous album, FLAMING RED.
Griffin's songs aren't particularly country-based, but more part of a long line of American folk music that spans both the omnipresent "Man of Constant Sorrow" and the songs of Lucinda Williams. She's equally at home with the cozy domesticity of "Making Pies" and the aching loneliness of "Rain," ...
