Photographers: Ben Watts; Ben Watts. Arranger: L.O.S. DaMaestro. Nobody could accuse R&B torch singer Trey Songz of ADD. From the intro of his third record, READY, Trey is focused on seduction, sometimes sensual to the level of sex-crazed, sometimes vulnerable, but always swaggering. Songs like "I Invented Sex" and "Neighbors Know My Name" are as straightforward and brash as their titles, but he also proves he is not too proud to beg as on "Does He Do It" (although even that narrows to a list of his many charms). Luckily, his silken voice backs it up, as he (mostly) eschews the auto-tune fad and wraps his early-`90s new jack style around the slick, soulful sounds. Three albums in and Trey Songz still sounds like he was raised in a bizzaro land where all music was based on the teachings of R. Kelly. From his cool delivery to his unashamed lyrics -- first line on the album: "This one here's a panty dropper" -- he's a time-warp version of Kelly, one just entering his mid-twenties with a more excusable, though just as excessive, horniness. To call it anything less, like "lust", wouldn't be fair to the lines about pillow-biting on "Neighbors Know My Name" -- because "she's a screamer" -- or all the other moments that get a bit too graphic for an album that doesn't carry a Parental Advisory sticker (especially dangerous since Songz still has teen appeal at his age). An odd mashing of his mentor's styles result in amusing numbers like "Jupiter Love" which packages its "do you right" message in an arrangement that's "I Believe I Can Fly" big, as if Disney commissioned a softcore porno soundtrack. Even at a whopping 17 like-minded tracks, all-night lovers wouldn't be caught dead complaining about how overly long it all is, and if you can't get down with an album featuring the key track "I Invented Sex," then you just don't understand the difference between ridiculous and delicious. Trey Songz might, or he might not, it's hard to tell, but either way, this is as entertaining and frivolous as a one-night stand should be. If those played-out R. Kelly albums aren't doing the trick anymore, Ready is just what it says it is. ~ David JeffriesRolling Stone - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "The 'Purple Rain'-like power ballad 'Yo Side of the Bed' shows that Songz can be awfully good when he plays it straight." Ready Music Review Average Rating: (4.9 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Incredible Once again, Trey SOngz has done an outstanding job in creating an album. His first was good, the second was even better, and the third times a charm. This is straight r&b, everything above a disappointment. Every song is phenominal and Trey really has talent. For those who want that true r&b, you have to go get Trey Songz album. You will not be disappointed at all. It is worth the buy. Submitted by Danielle (Columbia. SC) Was This Review Helpful? LOVE this CD Ok, I dont even know where to begin with this review. I have been listening to this CD non-stop for the past two weeks, it's just that good. It is definitely a R&B song with a bunch of great love-songs. Trey does such a good job at really sounding genuine. His voice is sweet and fits each of his songs perfectly. He doesn't scream or overdue any of his songs. My favorite song keeps changing each time I listen to it but out of all of them, I really like Holla If You Need Me, Jupiter Love, Neighbors Know My Name, Love Lost, Does He Do It, and LOL:) Submitted by Lisa (Kingstree, SC) Was This Review Helpful? $17.09 "A Perfect Time: Drummers and Other Friends" is, indeed, a perfect time to acquaint yourself with a truly splendid vocalist. Mann, who originally hails from Brooklyn and has now settled in L.A., is owner and operator of a splendid instrument that owes as much to June Christy as it does to Sarah Vaughan. She possesses the unique ability to be simultaneously cool and sultry, to seem as crystalline as Baccarat's finest yet smoky as a Dietrich film festival, and to suggest that she's just stepped out of the 1950s while sounding utterly contemporary. As the album's title hints, Mann's intent is to celebrate her admiration for first-class drummers by dividing the 15 tracks among four of the very best, with Peter Erskine, Joe LaBarbera and Roy McCurdy each sitting in for four tracks and Paul Kreibich stick-handling the remaining three. The four lads' contributions are expectedly superb. But, being the pros they are, all are far more interested in keeping their brilliance in the background, pushing Mann's magnificent voice fully in the spotlight. (Oh, and while we're on the subject of superlative accompaniment, it is imperative to add that bassists Chuck Berghofer and John Clayton deserve high praise for their equally subdued, equally gorgeous work.) The exquisite way in which Mann, with considerable assistance from arranger, producer and pianist Tamir Hendelman, finesses the likes of "Love Walked In," "Just in Time," "Once in a While" and "Watch What Happens" is beyond compare. But what makes A Perfect Time most pleasurable is Mann's ability to dig up less-familiar chestnuts -- Harry Warren's softly wistful "Summer Night," Johnny Mandel's heartbreakingly wishful "Quietly There," Jimmy Van Heusen and Sammy Cahn's ...
