| | U2 No Line On The Horizon CD (2009)
Drink, Fight, Fuck Vol. 3 songs
$10.49 There's no shortage of legendary producers in line to work with music world titans U2; when work with Rick Rubin broke off, Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois stepped in. The resulting NO LINE ON THE HORIZON, 2009's offering from the Irish rockers, continues in the grand U2 tradition, as soaring pop anthems like opening single "Get on Your Boots" pair with experimental melanges like "Tripoli," on a striking album featuring touches of all the albums come before, yet hinting at new worlds for Bono to conquer.
After spending the 1990s experimenting with electronic music and returning to arena-ready rock during the first few years of the 21st century, U2 stakes out territory somewhere between those two points on 2009's NO LINE ON THE HORIZON. Enlisting its go-to production trio of Brian Eno, Daniel Lanois, and Steve Lillywhite, the Irish quartet seems intent on crafting a quirkier companion piece to HOW TO DISMANTLE AN ATOMIC BOMB, and they succeed with restless tracks such as "Get on Your Boots," which sounds like "Vertigo" hijacked by T. Rex, and "Stand Up Comedy," a wiry number that lets the Edge cut loose with barbed guitar lines. Some of most striking songs on HORIZON are the ones that venture farthest from U2's comfort zone, as on the surprisingly weighty title track, ...

$9.35 L.A.'s Pistol Grip makes a lasting impression on The Shots From the Kalico Rose, firing off one of 2001's finest authentic punk releases. "Crucifixion Politix" rolls out of the speakers like a bar fight spilling out onto the sidewalk, with blazing guitars that rival vintage Rancid. Vocalist Stax takes aim at religious and political hypocrisy as his bandmates stir up a melodic but incendiary Ruts and Stiff Little Fingers-influenced assault on tunes like "Aristocratic State" and "Get Up to Get Shot Down" that never disappoint. PG brings their sound to new heights on "Bourgeoisie," which can only be described as "punkabilly," complete ...
| | Van Dyke Parks Song Cycle Vinyl LP (1968)
Drink, Fight, Fuck Vol. 3 music CDs
$16.89 When this album was released in 1968 it stood apart from everything else--and still does today. This is not because SONG CYCLE was ahead of its time--rather, it belongs to another time and place, a parallel world that draws breath irrespective of calendar, clock, or map. Van Dyke Park's debut carries an apt and simple title. These dozen selections are of a piece, both because of their arrangement and their composition. Parks was already considered a talent to be reckoned with following his collaborative work with Brian Wilson, penning lyrics for The Beach Boys--evocative nuggets of seductive inscrutability. Here again the sounds and the lyrics dart in and around each other like poetic dancers. A song such as "The All Golden" has no clear antecedents. It's ...
