| | Jacob Young Sideways CD (2008)
Weather Report
$15.05 A thoroughly modern guitarist, Jacob Young (from Norway) was influenced chiefly by masters Jim Hall and John Abercrombie. Young's style is of the dense, mood-laden fusion variety particular to ECM Records. Recalling the earliest discs from that label by Bill Frisell and John Abercrombie, SIDEWAYS balances absorbing motifs, chilled-out textures, and flowing, probing solos. Trumpeter Mathias Eick evokes the mellow, cerebral styles of Miles Davis and Kenny Wheeler, and ECM vet drummer Jon Christensen is, as expected, perfect.
Second album by Norwegian/American guitarist Jacob Young features the working band first heard on "Evening Falls", a group established to reflect the compatible styles and ideas of three generations of Norwegian jazz players.
Photographer: Colin Eick.
Personnel: Jacob Young (guitar); Vidar Johansen (bass clarinet, tenor saxophone); Mathias Eick (trumpet); Mats Eilertsen (double bass); Jon Christensen (drums).
Recording information: Rainbow Studio, Oslo, Norway (05/2006).
| | Weather Report Night Passage CD (1980)
Weather Report
$5.95 Principally recorded at The Complex, Los Angeles, California.
All things being relative, this is Weather Report's straightahead album, where the elaborate production layers of the late-'70s gave way to sparer textures and more unadorned solo improvisation in the jazz tradition, electric instruments and all. The flaw of this album is the shortage of really memorable compositions; it is more of a vehicle for the virtuosic feats of what is considered by some to be the classic WR lineup -- Joe Zawinul, Wayne Shorter, Jaco Pastorius, Robert Thomas, Jr. and Peter Erskine. For Erskine, this is is first full studio album and he amply demonstrates his terrific sense of forward drive unique among the other superb drummers in WR annals. "Port of Entry" is a tour de force for Jaco, who knocks off several of those unbelievably slippery, pointed runs that have made him a posthumous legend. There is also a tremendously fun retro trip to Duke Ellington's "Rockin' in Rhythm," everybody swinging their heads and hands off. ~ Richard S. Ginell
Weather Report: Wayne Shorter (soprano & tenor saxophones); Joe Zawinul (piano, Fender Rhodes piano, synthesizer); Jaco Pastorious (electric & fretless basses); Peter Erskine (drums); Robert Thomas, Jr. (percussion).
Engineers: George Massenburg, Jerry Hudgins, Brian Risner.
| | Bobby Hutcherson Head On CD (1971) Bonus Tracks
Weather Report
$10.39 HEAD ON (1971) is the most ambitious and adventurous work in Bobby Hutcherson's discography. Though the composer/bandleader/vibraphonist did contribute one tune ("Mtume"), HEAD ON mostly features the ambitious compositions and arrangements of Todd Cochran, who also plays piano on the session. The resulting music is dense and polyrhythmic, and bracing, drawing parallels to Miles Davis's BITCHES BREW and other first wave fusion albums.
Cochran arranges for the 18-piece group here with a mad scientist's zeal but still manages to create precise orchestral textures. Elements of chamber music and funk abound, and Hutcherson's clear, cool marimba and vibraphone work shimmers throughout. This release marks the album's first appearance on CD, giving Hutcherson fans reason to rejoice.

| | Ablaye Cissoko Sira CD (2008)
Weather Report
$13.89 The collaboration between African kora player Ablaye Cissoko and trumpeter Volker Goetze is a thing of real late-night beauty. It lives on the tipping point between West African music and ethereal, atmospheric European jazz. In many ways, the disc belongs to Cissoko, whose playing and singing on both traditional and original material powers the whole things, gently lulling everything along, with Goetze's contributions more minor, often punctuating and filling in the material. But it somehow manages to become more than the sum of its parts, a conjoining of talents that brings real magic. The pair set out their stall perfectly on the opening title track, where Goetze floats in the background with short statements behind Cissoko's singing and mellifluous playing, and it simply continues from there. Goetze seems happy to let his partner occupy center stage, and the way they do things is glorious. It might not be an album you want to play all the time, but for those wee small hours, when you want music to envelop you, this is the disc. ~ Chris Nickson
Personnel: Ablaye Cissoko (vocals, kora); Volker Goetze (recorder, trumpet).
Audio Mixer: Connie Ende.
| | Miles Jaye Divine Ascension CD (2003)
Weather Report
$14.79 Review: JazzTimes (October 1995)"Multi-instrumentalist Miles Jaye gives the unique sound of electric violin center stage on Divine Ascension, a thoughtfully executed album running across a wide range of styles, while spinning ecstatic, entertaining grooves. Also serving as producer, Jaye makes deft arrangment choices ranging from sparse and tender (weeping violin and resonant piano counter melody on "Superstar") to fully textured (Divine Ascenion's interwoven dreamscape of piano, bass and percussion). Lesser tunes, like the puffy synthesized "I've Been A Fool For You" are redeemed by the more inventive. An eclectic read of Charlie Parker's "Donna Lee," featuring a beat with backspin and a notebending lead, and "Dewey", a cool combination of heavy chord piano falls and cutting acidic lead lines are the real stars here. Relentlessly twisted, effortlessly cool pieces like these should go a long way to put this Miles on the map.[Hilarie Grey]
Personnel includes: Miles Jaye (electric violin).
