This lighthearted look at divorce and the trials of making a new start deftly translates Dan Wakefield's novel to screen. Phil Potter (Burt Reynolds) leads a settled life with wife Jessica (Candice Bergen) that is ends abruptly when she leaves him to focus on her songwriting career. Retreating to Boston and the support of his brother (Charles Durning) and wife, Phil is introduced to Marilyn (Jill Clayburgh), a wary pre-school teacher who has seen her share of men on the rebound. Phil and Marilyn match wits and experiences in a clever rapport that shows they may very well be made for each other, but the reappearance of Jessica thows havoc into the mix. What might become melodrama is handled with expert comic flair by director Alan J. Pakula, who displays his gifts an "actor's director" as evidenced by Reynolds's subtle comic performance. STARTING OVER is more akin to the sharp-witted romantic comedies of the 1930s than with more sober dramas such as KRAMER VS. KRAMER (directed by Robert Benton)--another 1970s film on the theme of divorce. In STARTING OVER, 1970s heartthrob Burt Reynolds is wryly cast against type as Phil Potter, a mild-mannered husband and writer in this light-hearted comedy. Reluctantly forced into the role of bachelor when his songstress wife Jessica (Candice Bergen) calls it quits, Phil must essentially start from scratch in the social realm. Reynolds's comic timing is dead-on in this good-humored look at marital collapse and the trials of making a new start. Introduced to wary school teacher Marilyn (Jill Clayburgh), Phil has a chance to put the pieces back together and show his charm, but his new-found self-confidence is challenged anew when ex Jessica comes back in the picture. Released theatrically in USA on October 5, 1979.
STARTING OVER is based on the novel by Dan Wakefield.
STARTING OVER is the first American comedy shot by Swedish cinematographer Sven Nykvist, known mostly for his collaboration with director Ingmar Bergman.
Both Jill Claybergh (Best Actress) and Candice Bergen (Best Supporting Actress) were nominated for Ocars for their performances in STARTING OVER.
STARTING OVER is one of the few Burt Reynolds films of the 1970s to highlight the subtle comedy of which he is capable yet less known. Previously he'd starred in DELIVERANCE and SMOKEY AND THE BANDIT (among others) in quite diverse roles. Later he was nominated for Best Supporting Actor for the film BOOGIE NIGHTS (1997) in which he plays a low-key, compassionate porn impresario--for which role and film he was reportedly displeased to be recognized by the academy.
Screenwriter James L. Brooks also wrote AS GOOD AS IT GETS and TERMS OF ENDEARMENT, both of which received Academy Awards in several categories--the latter for Best Screenplay and Best Director (both going to Brooks).
Brooks has also directed other popular, successful films such as BROADCAST NEWS and AS GOOD AS IT GETS.

Burt Reynolds plays Phil Potter, a low-key, contented magazine writer who tries to put his life back together after his wife (Candice Bergen) opts for independence as a singer-songwriter. Jill Clayburgh, a wacky nursery school teacher, tries to help him surmount the emotional hurdles, but it's rough going in this delightful contemporary tale; he's still hung up on his ex-wife. Starting Over is sprinkled with comedy, from Bergen's cacophonous singing to Reynolds' near-breakdown in Bloomingdale's. Both Clayburgh and Bergen received Academy Award. nominations.

$10.05 This World War II comedy stars Cary Grant in an uncharacteristic turn as Walter Eckland. Walter is an unshaven bum who inhabits a deserted island in the South Seas. Completely boozed up, unshaven, and badly dressed, Walter is a watcher for Japanese spy planes. An Australian Navy Commander, Frank Houghton (Trevor Howard) has pressed Walter, who once had his own cruiser at the beginning of the war, to become the sole occupant of a strategic watching station. It is into this world that smart and sexy Catherine Frenau (Leslie Caron) is drawn when Walter, en route in a dinghy to rescue another watcher, stumbles on to the schoolteacher and a flock of seven young girls. The girls have been marooned because their pilot was ordered to leave them to rescue the survivors of an abandoned bomber. Ralph Nelson directs shrewdly and keeps the comedy crisp as these eight survivors try to inhabit the same small island without driving each other crazy. The sharp witted Academy Award winning screenplay by Peter Stone and Frank Tarloff, is based on a story by S.H. Barnett.

| | Ally Mcbeal: The Complete Series DVDs (2009) Widescreen; With CD
Starting Over review
$132.99 Legal series are usually serious affairs, filled with intrigue and drama a la L.A. LAW and THE PRACTICE, but this David E. Kelley creation strayed from the formula with its mixture of quirky comedy and romance. Calista Flockhart stars as Ally McBeal, a young, miniskirt-wearing lawyer who finds herself employed at Cage/Fish & Associates, a law firm where her childhood sweetheart (Gil Bellows) and his pretty wife (Courtney Thorne-Smith) also work. Sounds normal enough, but when you add in wattle-loving partner Richard Fish (Greg Germann), socially awkward (but successful) boss John Cage (Peter MacNicol), and a number of dream sequences, ALLY MCBEAL gets delightfully strange. Ally and her coworkers fought for a variety of oddball cases and causes, but the most interesting part of this Fox dramedy was what happened in the bedroom, not the courtroom. Ally found (and lost) love with partners played by actors such as Jesse L. Martin, Robert Downey Jr., and Jon Bon Jovi, but the men got equally attractive love interests played by Portia de Rossi, Lucy Liu, and Christina Ricci. Touted as a modern-day Mary Tyler Moore, Ally McBeal was a turn-of-the-millennium heroine that numerous viewers could identify with. This collection includes every episode from the show's five-season run.
