Not that anyone's keeping score, but as Band alumni records go, Levon is pulling way ahead of the pack with his second keeper in as many tries in the '00s. ELECTRIC DIRT finds the Arkansas legend building on its critically acclaimed predecessor, DIRT FARMER, and bringing the democratic ebullience of his weekly Midnight Ramble live sessions (held in his barn) to record. Ramble stalwarts Larry Campbell and Amy Helm (Levon's daughter) appear all over the album (Campbell as producer and multi-instrumentalist; Amy Helm providing genetically in tune harmonies), while a loose, New Orleans vibe pervades courtesy of Allen Toussaint's horn arrangements (covers of the Grateful Dead's "Tennessee Jed", Randy Newman's "Kingfish" and other album standouts). The album, naturally, belongs to Helm, who is in stunningly assured vocal form (remarkable for a throat cancer survivor) and whose slack rustic groove remains irresistible (who else can make a mandolin sound like funk instrument). Helm--never considered one of the Band's chief songwriters--reveals his songcraft chops with ELECTRIC DIRT'S emotional centerpiece, "Growing Trade," an instant classic co-written with Campbell that rates with the Band's best.

Foster.Rolling Stone (p.80) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "Helm struts his slippery shell-game groove on 'Jed' and works it deftly throughout....He digs deepest here with his voice, which veers between soulful stoicism and boozy yowl." Dirty Linen (p.54) - "[O]n ELECTRIC DIRT, his voice is full-bodied, vibrant, and exuberant -- fully comparable to his days with the Band." Billboard (p.28) - "It's driven by Helm's warm, amazingly rich moonshine vocals and decorated with bluesy guitar sprinkles, angelic violins and lovely harmonies..." Record Collector (magazine) (p.84) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "It's the rustic and rambunctious Helm vocal, a cornerstone of The Band's sound, that provides these songs with their charm and personality." Electric Dirt songs
$18.95 My second New Age project is an inspiration and reflection to different events and/or situations. Each song is a love affair with the "Spirit of Music." "I am the brush that the 'Spirit of Music' uses in drawing its etchings on the canvas of expression."The first song, "Flowers on the Hillside", was inspired when my wife and I were on a driviing trip to Carmel, California during the spring time. Through the middle valley, we saw colorful flowers on the hillside swaying in the wind. It was beautiful! The second song, "Le Jardin de Emilie", is dedicated to my wife Emilie. A few years ago, we were living in an apartment with a balcony. She planted the most beautiful garden with lots of greenery and flowers. It was so inspirational to me. This song is created with a French feel.Song number three, "Feathers in the Wind" is one of those songs that will be included in my next Brazilian Jazz project. I am collaborating with Elisete Retter who is a Brazilian singer/writer living in Israel. She is completing lyrics (in Portuguese). I was sitting in my back yard and feathers were drifting in the sky.Song number four, "A Song by my Angel", is a melody that was given to me in a dream by my Angel whose name is Melody. The number five song, "Flowers of Brazil", is another song that will be included in the Brazilian Jazz CD. This is an up-beat jazzy Samba song.My sixth song, "A Song in my Spirit", is a melody that has been with me for ...
| | Alan Darragh Time To Disenchant CD (2008)
Electric Dirt album
$6.69 Alan Darragh continues to explore his creativity on the piano. All nine tracks on Time to Disenchant are original. More importantly, these are not versions played from the written music but are the original improvisations, recorded live in Alan's studio in Toronto over the course of the year. And there lies the challenge - creating music, as complete in structure, form and melody as possible, straight out of one's head from beginning to end. For this twenty-three year old pianist and composer, there is no other way. He sits at his piano, his large hands covering an eleventh on the keyboard. While his emotions wrestle with the inconveniences of life, his intellect roams free creating song after song. Alan writes: “Only I know what I'm going to do next. But until I do it, even I don't know what it will be. Musical improvisation is like getting up on the stage at a writers convention and writing a novel on the spot. Nothing is predetermined. When I sit down to play I don't think - today, I'm going to play six hundred key changes or just one tone center. What I play is what comes out that day. Although it's not a conscious decision, by not trying to cover too many keys, it allows me to concentrate on the song and less on the 'music.' But I am a glutton for chords. They give music a soul –”Alan Darragh, a young poet, composer and jazz pianist, has been studying and playing piano for more than 16 years. A natural improviser with an instinctive relaxed feel, he discovered early that jazz was his métier. He began his formal studies with Dave Hildinger, “a brilliant arranger at home with both bebop and modern jazz” as well as a pianist with a magical touch. A rigorous teacher, Mr. Hildinger left no jazz touchstone unturned. After moving to Toronto in 2004, Alan continued his studies with Bernie Senensky, who helped develop his natural bent for jazz composition. To date Alan has more than 90 compositions, many with lyrics. Adam David's ...
| | Derek Warfield Bonnie Blue Flag CD (2009)
Electric Dirt CD music
$13.15 Derek Warfield looks to the South in his latest exploration of the music of the Irish in America's Civil WarA review by Kevin P. Gorman Music and singing are never enough for former Wolfe Tones' leader Derek Warfield, and with "Bonnie Blue Flag," his latest album, once again Warfield attempts and succeeds at touching the patriotic and sentimental soul of the Irish listener with his folksy Irish singing style and his impressive storytelling, placing every track in historical context. His 20-tune album titled "The Bonnie Blue Flag, The Musical Story of the Confederate Irish" his third in a series of musical collections drawn from America's most catastrophic and costly conflict Dublin-born Warfield again turns his attention to the Irish experience in America's Civil War. The twist, of course, is this album's focus on the music of the Irish who went South, a fraction of the total in America in 1861, but a significant fraction, all the same, numbering in the tens of thousands. Warfield offers keen insights into the origins of each tune in the booklet, and intriguing anecdotes about historic figures. Warfield and his band, who masterfully play only traditional instruments, recorded the album to, as Warfield explains, tell "the story of the Confederate Irish, (which) has been sorely neglected over the years, (and) to recall some small part of the gallantry and sacrifice of these 'Rebel' Irish." The album is rich with Confederate-themed lyrics set to familiar ...
