About The Internet Comedy Network Based out of Atlanta, Georgia, Jerry Buckner and Bill Hoger worked together 21 years writing comedy for a host of original characters and performing celebrity impressions daily on a network of radio stations across the U.S. Prior to working in radio, Jerry enjoyed a successful career writing songs and producing records including the 1982 hit "Pac Man Fever," and the theme to “WKRP In Cincinnati.” In 1984 he teamed up with Bill Hoger, a gifted comedy writer and performer, to provide comedy for a local radio show. Soon other markets began signing on and the Radio Comedy Network was born. Since then they have been featured on VH-1, TNN, PBS, CBS, and the ABC Radio Network. Bill passed away in 2005 but left behind a treasure of comedy for fans to enjoy. One of his most popular features was telephone prank calls to unsuspecting people. Now available on CD from the newly renamed Internet Comedy Network comes a collection of his very best and funniest calls. Rhino's 2002 release The Anthology: 1968-1992 is essentially the highlights from their seminal 2000 box set, And It's Deep Too!, which contained the complete recordings (more or less) of Richard Pryor, the greatest comedian of his time and one of the great cultural forces of the 20th century. Since this is a clear case of recycling, it could be argued by some curmudgeons that there simply isn't a point behind this release, since it was all reissued. They're wrong, of course, since this not only does an excellent job of rounding up much of the greatest and best-known of his classic albums, but it provides a succinct, welcoming introduction to a large body of work -- something that simply couldn't be said about the lavish box set, no matter how great it is. Dare to Be Stupid begins with what is perhaps Weird Al Yankovic's best parody ever, the brilliant and cutting "Like a Surgeon." Turning the tacky Madonna hit inside out and upside down, Yankovic comes up with a hilarious satire of the medical profession. Although the implications were probably missed by the none too bright Madonna, and may not have even been intentional on the part of Yankovic, it was a rich idea to use his parody to ridicule a serious subject rather than just take another poke at junk food or game shows. The record's title track follows, and it is the best of Yankovic's original songs that had been recorded so far. Any song that begins with a request to put down your chain saw can't be all bad. One of the best tracks is the amazing medley "Hooked on Polkas" that concludes the album. Yankovic goes for broke here, his slick band barely keeping up with him as he drags all manner of hit parade schlock through the harmonic wringer washer known as the accordion. It's a hell of a trip, including references to Z.Z. Top as well as disco and punk rock, and accomplishes more musically in less than four minutes than an entire evening with the likes of Brave Combo.
