As one of the seminal college-rock bands of the late '80s/early '90s, Dinosaur Jr. definitively bridged the gap between the musical mindsets of '80s "alternative" and '90s "indie." Along the way, they influenced scads of young slackers wielding fuzzy guitars and moldy Neil Young albums. The recordings around which the band's legend largely revolves (GREEN MIND, YOU'RE LIVING ALL OVER ME, BUG) epitomized the slacker-rock aesthetic through J. Mascis's laid-back drawl and the band's Crazy Horse-meets-Replacements attack. After bassist Lou Barlow split for Sebadoh, Dinosaur Jr. attained more commercial success before falling apart, the final album popping out in 1997. A decade later, Mascis and Barlow reunited for a tour that led to the recording of BEYOND.
While the post-Barlow Dinosaur albums found Mascis pushing the edges of the group's original stylistic template, BEYOND is a resounding return to form. The crunching guitars and whomping rhythm section move as one, hammering out simple, forceful riffs and rhythms that evoke the band's glory days. The proceedings are invested with so much energy that even the notoriously laconic-sounding Mascis sounds hopped up on the excitement of rediscovery the magic and electricity that made Dinosaur Jr. special from the beginning.

Toronto-based electro noise squad Holy Fuck specialize in the kind of unholy racket worthy of their expletive-brandishing moniker. Finely honing their live electronics-aided lo-fi "motorik" for their second album, LP, the band wields overdriven Casiotones against steady-state beats set for oblivion. Upon an insistent, groove-heavy pulse that recalls the hypnotic propulsion of Krautrock outfits like Neu! and Harmonia, HF grafts blistering shards of distorted synth bleat and fractal-chaos effects, creating the kind of psych-noise mayhem that's atypical in the techno-rock fraternity. While tracks like the high-octane opener "Super Inuit" hazard a course midway between noise improvisation and garage punk, others like the nearly-symphonic "Lovely Allen" reveal an almost tranquil, though no less spirited, repose.

At only 18 years of age, British MC Dizzee Rascal made a strikingly audacious debut with BOY IN DA CORNER. Born of the UK garage/2-step scene, but inspired by the dark lyrical content of American hip-hop (Wu-Tang Clan, Mobb Deep), Dizzee combines these influences to form his own distinctive style. The result is a collection of tracks that are almost physical in their assault on listeners' senses.
The production, provided by Dizzee himself, sounds like the score for a grimy, post-apocalyptic video game set in a shadowy, dangerous underworld ("Stop Dat," "2 Far," "Hold Ya Mouf"). On the mic, however, is where Dizzee makes his most penetrating mark. Attacking the world with the pure fury of a bitter teenager, Dizzee taps into his troubled East London past to reveal a tormented, damaged soul ("Sittin' Here," "I Luv U," "Brand New Day"). Yet, amidst all the murkiness, there is a glimmer of hope that fills BOY IN DA CORNER, making it an ultimately redemptive record.
