Blood Sweat & Tears 4
$10.39 Personnel: Lil Wayne (rap vocals); Mannie Fresh, Baby (rap vocals). It would be easy to read too much into the title of Lil Wayne's fourth album, especially in light of a mixtape (cunningly titled The Prefix) that preceded this, which featured the MC over a handful of tracks off Shawn "Jay-Z" Carter's Black Album. The title actually refers to Lil Wayne's actual last name (hint: it isn't Wayne), in addition to referencing the apartments run by Wesley Snipes' character in New Jack City. Although much has been made about Wayne's growth and new world view, there's about as much change as you'd expect from a Southern rap star who has been in the public eye from his late teens to his twenties. Mannie Fresh's stout production is in effect as ever, and to the MC's credit, the rhymes are less measured and are all the better for it. To beat that dead horse one more time, the album is far too long and not concerned enough with the quality control, despite including more than enough bright spots to keep the followers following. At just over 79 minutes in length, it's made evident that the length would actually be just over 89 minutes if a CD could hold 90 minutes' worth of music. ~ Andy Kellman Lil' Wayne has been in the national spotlight ...
| | Notorious B I G Ready To Die CD (1994) With DVD; Reissue; Remastered
Blood Sweat & Tears 4
$12.65 Personnel: The Notorious B.I.G. (rap vocals); Diana King, Total (vocals); Method Man (rap vocals); Sybil Pennix (spoken vocals); Chucky Thompson (various instruments). The album that reinvented East Coast rap for the gangsta age, Ready to Die made the Notorious B.I.G. a star, and vaulted Sean "Puffy" Combs' Bad Boy label into the spotlight as well. Today it's recognized as one of the greatest hardcore rap albums ever recorded, and that's mostly due to Biggie's skill as a storyteller. His raps are easy to understand, but his skills are hardly lacking -- he has a loose, easy flow and a talent for piling multiple rhymes on top ...

Blood Sweat & Tears 4
$12.55 Despite his protestation that "this is just a mixtape" on the title track, Lil Wayne obviously expended plenty of effort on making DEDICATION 3, the third volume of his DEDICATION mixtape series with DJ Drama. While the heavy gangsta themes and comparatively stentorian tones of Wayne's crew members sometimes seem at odds with his own laconic style, Wayne's sardonic-stoner vibe finds precedent in everything from vintage Snoop Dogg to "Family Affair"-era Sly Stone, with a dark sense of humor that makes even the hardest-sounding tracks go down easy. For those who have already bought into the Lil Wayne mythology, that genius can be found on Dedication 3, glittering through the 80 minutes of cracked-voice interludes and Sarah Palin soliloquizing, and popping up in Auto-Tuned "verses" between an endless slew of guest rappers. But make no mistake, the record is frequently garish. The parade of MCs spit hard, but do so smuttily and almost exclusively about weed, as if they were going to infuse the subject with Lil Wayne's artistry. Exacerbating the situation, when faced with the quandary of which single off the most ...
| | Eminem Relapse CD (2009)
Blood Sweat & Tears 4
$10.85 Audio Mixers: Dr. Dre; Eminem. Lyrical acrobat Slim Shady returns after a five-year absence with his fifth major label release, continuing to strike the perfect balance between brooding insight and absolute silliness on 2009's RELAPSE. Opening single "Crack a Bottle" reunites Detroit's maddest rapper with his superstar mentor (Dr. Dre) and protege (50 Cent) on a fittingly funky tour de force. Eminem's RELAPSE, a double album released after five years of recorded silence, a record featuring Dr. Dre behind the boards for the first time since 2000, faced no shortage of the relentless pressure of expectations. A narrative of survival after facing down his demons in rehab ...
