If you love the summer, sunshine, and New York City, then you just may find quite a bit of pleasure in the sophomore outing by Nickodemus, SUN PEOPLE. Having made a name for himself in the late '90s as a regular DJ at Giant Step-produced gatherings, Nickodemus is fast becoming a well-regarded producer in his own right with each successive release. Throughout SUN PEOPLE, he manages to touch upon several different stylistic approaches, such as the delightful retro Latin sounds of "La Lluvia," the reggae-ish "The Love Feeling," and the Middle Eastern-influenced "Didibina." If you're looking for some fine background music during your next summertime barbecue, SUN PEOPLE could sound quite nice between bites of your tofu burger.
Personnel: Nickodemus (programming).

| | Leona Lewis Echo CD (2009)
Sun People CD music
$11.18 The goal of Leona Lewis' 2007 debut, Spirit, was to prove that an X Factor winner could be a phenomenon not just in the U.K., but in the rest of the world. The goal of her second album, 2009's Echo, is to prove that success was no fluke, to build upon "Bleeding Love" and turn Lewis into an actual diva. Certainly, Echo in any of its incarnations -- its song listings are tailored for individual markets, with the U.K. getting a cover of Oasis' "Stop Crying Your Heart Out," while the U.S. gets a second song co-written by Justin Timberlake -- uses the chilly, synthesized "Bleeding Love" as its foundation, creating a sheet of sound equal parts Euro-pop and modern American R&B. As opposed to the often-stuffy Spirit, this is proudly modern, and if the sounds emanating from the two sides of the Atlantic might seem to be aesthetically opposed, they're both producer-driven music constructed layer by layer from rhythm to the vocal, where the overall sound matters more than what's being sung. Which isn't to say that Lewis doesn't sing the hell out of the songs on Echo: she has an uncanny gift for hitting impossible notes without seeming as if she's grandstanding. In fact, there's nary an ounce of diva in Lewis, she seems to enjoy singing for the sake of it, which ...

$9.79 Managing to sound electronic and organic at once, and finding a heady joy in the power of the rant, We Are Wolves cheerfully embrace contradictions before reducing them to dust on their first full-length, Non-Stop Je Te Plie en Deux. Hailing from Montreal, We Are Wolves base their music around the humble wheeze of aging analog synths and the primal rhythms of a stripped-down drum kit; the music has a pulse that's metronomic but possessed of flesh-and-blood life, while the collision of the low-tech keyboards with the report of electric guitar and bass lends their skeletal melodies a force neither would have had on their own. The low-rent rave-up of "Moi, Rythme Magique" sounds like a vintage new wave dance tune that you could actually shake ...
| | Revere Modern Science CD (2005)
Sun People album
$5.99 "If the Strokes gave less of a damn about being cool, they'd be this good". (Brian Mann, musicnet)"Like a weightier Coldplay or Echo And The Bunnymen without the bombast, Revere excel in creating a brand of indie rock that could have arenas full of people punching the air". (Don O'Mahony, Evening Echo)/REVERERevere is a four-piece band that hails from Cork, Ireland. With a sound that is best characterised by its raw guitar driven melodies, dynamic rhythm section, progressive arrangements and affecting lyrics, they have steadily built-up a strong following around the venues and clubs of Cork./BiographyJohn Carroll, John Mclean, Gary Lucy and James O'Sullivan grew up in Cork. They came together as students in secondary school in 1997 and quickly started playing as a group. All four shared a passion for music, and a determination to create a distinctive style. "At first we jammed, it was fun, but there was no real cohesion to it. All things musical, like dynamics, arrangements and the likes were above us." Recalls John McLean. It was not long, however, before they would adapt to this newfound penchant for music and after eventually agreeing on a name, Revere was born. "We caught on. And as soon as we did the band began to take some form." Says Gary about their earlier practice sessions. When asked about influences on their music, John Carroll offers this answer - "Influences? Well that's a hard question. We don't like to pigeon- hole ourselves or at that, try to label our music. An ambiguous response to the question of our 'sound' will always be called for in this band because, I guess, we are all coming from different places, with different ideas, opinions ...

| | Tarrus Riley Contagious CD (2009)
Sun People songs
$13.05 It's a minor problem, but if there's a complaint to be made about Tarrus Riley's 2009 effort CONTAGIOUS, it's that his previous effort, PARABLES, has a much better layout. The crowding together of redundant numbers and the uneven flow experienced here make CONTAGIOUS feel more like a collection of songs than a fully thought-out album, but they are great songs for the most part, performed in that dignified, warm, rasta manner that has made Riley a favorite of the new roots set. "Living the Life of a Gun" is a wonderfully smooth alternative to Anthony B. or Sizzla's social commentary, and when a children's choir enhances the moving prayer "Let Peace Reign," Riley skillfully moves into Wyclef's territory with elaborate arrangements hung on grand statements. The lovers numbers are just as good, if not better, this time out with a sensual take on Michael Jackson's hit "Human Nature" and the yearning "Love's Contagious"--based on Marley's ...
