| | Queen Ifrica Montego Bay CD Queen Ifrica Discography of CDs
The number of female reggae artists has increased since the 1970s, but many of them are crossover artists with a slick, ultra-commercial approach; not many of them are expressing a decidedly Rastafarian point of view. But one female reggae artist of the 21st century who could honestly claim to be following in the footsteps of Rita Marley and Marcia Griffiths is Ventrice Morgan, aka Queen I-Frica, whose MONTEGO BAY makes no secret of her Rastawoman perspective. A few of the tracks venture into lovers rock territory with pleasingly romantic results, including "In My Dreams" and "Far Away." But all things considered, this 2009 release is roots reggae rather than crossover reggae--and the Rastafarian point of view is alive and well on sociopolitical offerings such as "Lioness on the Rise," "Calling Africa," "Streets Are Bloody," and "Coconut Shell." Purchase Montego Bay CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Luciano Jah Is My Navigator CD (2008)
Montego Bay
$11.19 Like many successful reggae singers, Luciano has something of an overexposure problem -- hardly a year has gone by since the mid-'90s without at least three Luciano albums (some of them, granted, probably unauthorized). But unlike many overexposed reggae singers, Luciano can actually stand up to that kind of exposure. His voice is so sweet and his songs so generally well written that it's hard to really imagine getting tired of him, and his huge popularity ensures that top-notch producers regularly offer him their finest rhythms. Jah Is My Navigator finds him in top form, singing his usual roots-and-culture songs over a host of old-school rhythms provided by legendary saxophonist and producer Dean Fraser. The first part of ...

| | Ugk Too Hard To Swallow CD (1992)
Montego Bay
$8.99 Truth in advertising, Too Hard to Swallow is UGK before they got funked up, grinding over some minimal, hard beats that aren't as complementary to their delivery as the smoother production they would later favor. Still, thanks to members Bun B and Pimp C's ability to write memorable rhymes, the album -- which repeats some tracks from their impossible to find indie release The Southern Way -- is a winner with three mammoth singles so important to the UGK story. "Something Good" puts a crooked beat under Rufus' most popular number, "Use Me Up" tells its pissed-off tale over a Bill Withers sample, and "Pocket Full of Stones" is a classic tale of crack rocks, Cadillacs, ...

| | Best Of My Love: The Best Of The Emotions CD (1996)
Montego Bay
$6.75 This 16-track, 69-minute disc surveys the Emotions' five-year, five-album stay on Columbia Records (and the custom label ARC), which was the group's most successful period, featuring the gold number one hit "Best of My Love" and the gold Top Ten hit "Boogie Wonderland" (on which the Emotions backed their mentors, Earth, Wind & Fire), both of which are heard here, along with four other songs that saw action on the pop charts. Surprisingly, the Emotions' five singles that only made the R&B charts are excluded in favor of album tracks. Unlike their earlier period at Stax, at Columbia the Emotions were essentially an adjunct to EW&F and its leader, Maurice White, and since EW&F featured tenor and falsetto vocals, the similarity was often heightened, especially on "Boogie Wonderland." Nevertheless, the sisters sang well over the horns and disco rhythms that characterized the pop/R&B music ...
| | Nas Illmatic CD (1994)
Montego Bay
$6.75 Out of a seemingly endless array of hip hop albums, every now and again something fresh and powerful rises to the top of the pile. Hailing from the Queensbridge Housing Projects in Long Island City (home to Marley Marl among others), 20-year old Nasir "Nas" Jones is less concerned with being an impersonator than with being an originator, bypassing adolescent fantasies and B-boy braggadocio in favor of jazzy beats, rap noir realism and new answers to urban despair.
ILLMATIC is his story, a cautionary tale of the inner-city streets, and as Nas makes plain on his opener, "The Genesis," this is what he does, with or without a record contract, and it's going to be served up straight, no chaser. And because Nas has the courage to transcend ...

| | LEF Right Way To Do It CD (2009)
Montego Bay
$12.15 Plain and simple with absolutely no exaggeration what so ever, LEF is one of the most diverse and creative MC's out. Its just clear as day if you really listen to his music. .His short term goals are to find management as a rap artist/beatmaker and or a record deal. From club songs, to strip club songs, to back pack rap, all the way to battle rapping and storytelling. This guy can really do it all. The Mount Vernon born gentlemen distinguished himself from others after a realization that he had the art of storytelling combined with a whitty wordplay. He worked on his craft listening to his older cousins ...
| | Royce Da 59 Street Hop CD (2009)
Montego Bay
$11.49 In pre-release interviews, Royce da 5'9" laid out a perfect description of his style: a Detroit kid brought up on Nas whose head was sent spinning once Eminem came around.
