Standard Screen; Soundtrack English; Soundtrack French; Soundtrack Spanish Kirk Douglas, as cowboy Jack Burns, breaks jail to help
an old friend and heads for the state border with the sheriff,
played by Walter Matthau, in pursuit. Based on Edward Abbey's
elegiac novel "The Brave Cowboy" and written by Dalton Trumbo,
Burns's flight for freedom on his old horse, pursued by jeeps and helicopter, is an eloquent metaphor for the passing of the old West and its virtues. Jack Burns tries to spring his friend from jail and ends up on the wrong side of the law and on the run alone. The sheriff must bring him to justice even though his sympathies lie with Jack. Produced by Joel Productions.

Lonely Are The Brave Movie Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) Great Lost Film Gets It's DVD Release! Kirk Douglas has stated this is his personal favorite of all his movies. Really,Lonely Are The Brave is an elegy for the pioneering cowboy spirit that is being stifled as the modern age is steadily encroaching. The viewer will empathise with Douglas' character as he (with his beloved horse)couragously tries to escape the cold, grinding jaws of the law. He is not a criminal but as Bob Dylan said,"To live outside the law you must be honest". Exceptional acting by all the cast including Gena Rowlands & Walter Matthau as well as Kirk . An intelligent, insightful film! Submitted by Dennis Wood (Naperville,Il) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 2 of 2 found this helpful.
A long forgotten gem......!! I am very glad that this long forgotten, underrated gem-of-a-film is on dvd at long last. Now the new generations have a chance to enjoy it as well. No wonder that Kirk Douglas has stated that out of the 90 films he had done, this is his favourite. Don't miss it!!! Submitted by y.ben-david (Givatayim, Israel) Was This Review Helpful? My Favorite Movie I've always kept a list of my top 20 favorite movies of all time and "Lonely are the Brave" has always been at the top of the list (followed by "2001: A Space Odyssey"). There has never been a more engaging, humanitarian American movie ever made, with the possible exception of "To Kill A Mockingbird." Kirk Douglas was perfect in his portrayal of one of the last cowhands. His "take it as it comes" attitude and self awareness makes for a compelling, heart breaking movie. I've seen it countless times and it never grows outdated. It's a movie that will encourage thought and talk within any group of people - kids included! Academy Award winner Kirk Douglas ignites the screen with one of his most personal roles as a cowboy on a collision course with the modern world in Lonely are the Brave. After landing himself in jail trying to break out his friend, Jack Burns (Douglas) finds himself alone and on the run from the law. Leading the manhunt is Sheriff Morey Johnson (Walter Matthau), who must bring Burns to justice despite his own sympathy for the fugitive. Co-starring Gena Rowlands, George Kennedy and Carroll O’Connor, Lonely are the Brave is an unforgettable portrait of a lawless man defying life in an orderly world.

Lonely Are The Brave DVD
$16.89 The title refers to the night when three men, Randy (Matt Dillon), his cousin Carl (Paul Reiser) and Detective Dehling (John Goodman), all meet Jewel Valentine (Liv Tyler) at a bar called McCool's. Actually, they don't so much meet her as fall under her spell when they first lay eyes on her. In her clinging red dress she looks like a cross between a beautiful damsel in distress and the Lady In Red looking for John Dillinger. The story begins with Randy, desperate to be rid of Jewel, hiring a sleazy hitman, played by Michael Douglas in an outré toupee. His story of how Jewel led him to ruin, filmed in a stylized flashback bathed in blue, is mirrored by Carl talking to his ...

$9.85 Blake Edwards's return to the male-in-meltdown territory he explored in 10 and THAT'S LIFE stars John Ritter as unemployed writer Zach, who is not only suffering from writer's block, but his drinking is out of control, as is his obsessive womanizing, and, not surprisingly, his wife wants to end their marriage. To add to his problems, his house has just burned down, and his agent is knocking at death's door. But since this is a Blake Edwards comedy, Zach has enough charm and relative affluence to continue his pursuits, which the director regards with a bemused deatchment. ...
