Entertaining, Musically Solid
I bought this album after seen Jack White in the documentary "It Might Get Loud" (which film I recommend). This album is performed entirely by Jack with his sister Megan on drums; and, as he writes in the liner notes, "no computers were used in the making of this album." Jack White is a guitar virtuoso. On this album his playing varies from simple, folk-style acoustic through straight-ahead rock to alt rock hammering. The lyrics are by turns whimsical, satirical and thoughtful. And the musical accompaniment is always appropriate. My criticism of the album would be that it lacks focus. It's a bit like a demo, showing off on one disc all the many ways he can play well, all the many kinds of songs he can write well. For best songs, I vote for "Seven Nation Army," as good an introductory song as any CD will ever get and guaranteed to get you to listen to the rest of the songs; "Ball and Biscuit," which mixes whimsical puns with a sendup of bad-ass blues lyrics, hooked together with some of the best guitar breaks you're going to hear this week; and the closing song, "It's True That We Love One Another," which is again a satirical rendition of a call-and-response between lovers. The cover of the Burt Bacharach song, "I Don't Know What To Do With Myself," is a dud. I don't know why, exactly. It's not a bad choice of song, per se; but perhaps, the execution is a bit too self-serious to fit in with the satirical slant of the remainder of the album. Overall, I recommend this album if you like well-played rock that doesn't take itself too seriously; but yet, underlying the satirical whimsy and musical virtuosity is something more than "just music," something worth listening to. Repeatedly.

It's True That We Love One Another
i am a big fan of the white strips and was surprised by this album. the first song Seven Nation Army grabs you right off with a strong bass line. the rest of the albun is lacking the edge their last album had and that was a disappointment to me. this is not there best album but it is a great album none the less.

one of the best alternative/ blues albums ever!
i love this album. there are so many great songs on it. and 'Seven Nation Army' is one of the all-time greats. it was one of the first songs i learned on the guitar, and it is amazing. i can't get enough. and then "Get Behind Me Satan" came out and i just lost my mind.

white red or balck instead
i have heard almost every song that the white stripes have made and i am obsessed! I have been listening to them since I was four years old and even then I was moved by their wicked style and sound. I am in middle school and we have this week at school where we have themed days. For one it was twin and triplet day and i asked my friend if she would be Meg white and I would be Jack! the only problem was I'm a girl but that would just make it more fun!!!!!!!!! :)

rock is not dead
but it isnt the white stripes either.. anyone who thinks that nothing will ever surpass classic rock needs to give it up and just accept that they can enjoy other music.. it would be a very sad thought to think that the best music was made 30 years ago and will never be topped, classic rock lovers are the most stubborn people on the planet, other music does exist.. but elephant isnt what you should be looking at.. look into deftones, rage against the machine, and dream theater if you want rock music
