| | Artillery When Death Comes CD - Import Artillery Discography of CDs
(2 Customer Reviews)
Underrated Danish thrashers Artillery have made an impressive comeback on this disc, their first studio release since 1999's B.A.C.K. They've obviously got lots of support from their label, Metal Mind -- the band's entire prior discography was collected in a 2007 box set, Through the Years, which also included tons of bonus tracks. On this disc, the band's core -- the guitar-playing Stytzer brothers, Michael and Morten -- remain, but longtime vocalist Flemming Rönsdorf has been replaced by Soren Nico Adamsen, a change that had some of the band's longtime fans worried. Fortunately, he's a terrific addition to the group, a mid-range singer (neither a growler nor a Rob Halford-esque shrieker) who may remind some of former Anthrax vocalist Joey Belladonna, especially when the group's thrash riffing becomes particularly '80s-esque. Which it does quite a bit. Artillery is not a band that's changed with the times -- they're still doing exactly what they did at the beginning of their career. "Delusions of Grandeur" offers some variation from the band's head-down, high-speed riffing style, but even the acoustic guitar melody that dominates this song is fast and intricate. "Not a Nightmare" starts off slow and doomy, but it's a bait-and-switch, as the pummeling begins soon enough. "Damned Religion" is another slow one, sounding almost like Heaven & Hell as Adamsen attempts Ronnie James Dio-esque bombast, with mixed results. One of the best things about When Death Comes, though, is the powerful production and mixing; every instrument is clear and thunderous, especially Peter Thorslund's bass. This is a quality disc recommended to any metalhead, not just thrash diehards. ~ Phil Freeman

| | Onslaught Killing Peace CD (2007)
When Death Comes CD music
$13.49 Metal historians have offered a long list of possible reasons why, in the '80s and early '90s, British thrash metal/speed metal veterans Onslaught were not as well known as Slayer, Metallica, Testament, Megadeth, Anthrax or Exodus -- and those reasons range from uneven, inconsistent albums to inadequate promotion to lineup changes to less than stellar production. Whatever the reason (or reasons), most of those headbanger historians naturally assumed that Onslaught would never be heard from again after disbanding in 1991. But in 2005, Onslaught surprised metalheads by getting back together. That is, they surprised the metalheads who were actually familiar with their old '80s output; a lot of folks had never heard of them (especially on the U.S. side of the Atlantic Ocean). Killing Peace is Onslaught's comeback album and their first recording since 1989's In Search of Sanity, and there is nothing uneven or inconsistent about this CD; the material is excellent, the performances inspired, crisp and undeniably focused. Onslaught's sound on this 2007 release is best described as '80s-style thrash metal/speed metal with a strong Slayer influence, a healthy appreciation of Judas Priest and hints of death metal. None of the forceful, hard-hitting tunes (which are obsessed with ...

When Death Comes music CDs
$12.55 Having instantly established themselves as a force to be reckoned among British-bred thrash bands, the members of Sabbat then set to work squandering their massive potential by trying to kill each other. With their creative relationship already heading south at alarming speed, the band's dual creative forces, vocalist Martin Walkyier and guitarist Andy Sneap, proceeded to butt heads throughout the recording process for Sabbat's second album, Dreamweavers, and it shows. As if to counteract Walkyier's increasingly unpredictable flights of lyrical fancy, thrash purist Sneap ensures that his riffing is even tighter and more precise (though no less inventive) than on the band's first album, but strangely, it also lacks some of the debut's bottom-end punch in the gut. The mood-setting intro, "The Beginning of the End," leads into first track proper, "The Clerical Conspiracy," and it's a corker, showing that Walkyier's utter contempt for organized religion continues to rage unabated. Also unchanged is his amazing verbosity, and he proceeds to spew mountains of rapid-fire ramblings about his favorite subjects (witchcraft, insanity, mythology, etc.). He also delves esoteric on the multi-faceted ...
