| | Prince Dirty Mind CD Prince Discography of CDs
DIRTY MIND is the most focused and uncompromising of Prince's early albums. In 1980, the Purple one wasn't a superstar, he was an undeniably gifted weirdo, sort of a funk/R&B Todd Rundgren, composing, performing and producing everything himself. His singular vision combined a driving, spare R&B style driven by danceable drum machines, funk guitar and colorful synths, (a palpable new wave influence is also at work here) with a near-scandalous attitude towards sex. The unprecedently graphic lyrics of tunes like "Head" and "Sister" make rock & roll rebels of the past decades look like uptight puritans. Prince hadn't yet developed the panoramic production style that would define his greatest '80s album, but this leaner, more direct sound suits the visceral material well.

Dirty Mind album
$9.99 Black Eyed Peas, the hip-hop crossover juggernaut that propelled singer Fergie and producer Will.I.Am to superstardom, have, since 2003's ELEPHUNK, been audaciously plugging away at their bombastic but lighthearted style of rap-cum-dance pop--an effort that has translated to a run of successful chart-topping singles including "My Humps," "Pump It," and "Don't Phunk with My Heart." Eager to follow up on the platinum-selling success of 2005's MONKEY BUSINESS, Black Eyed Peas have returned with THE E.N.D. (an acronym for "Energy Never Dies"), their third studio effort. Combining Will.I.Am's thumping 808 kick drum-infused beats with production assistance from a host of collaborators (including vocoder-loving Torontoians MSTRKRFT and French house veteran David Guetta), BEP's infectious party-time rhymes are an easy match for the album's Ed Banger-style of electro rapping and Auto Tune jamming, especially on lead-off single and sure-fire 2009 summer anthem "Boom Boom Pow."
Audio Remasterers: Chris Bellman; Brian "BC" Catena.

| | Vince Vance & The Valiants All I Want For Christmas Is You CD (1993)
Dirty Mind music CDs
$10.75 This album's title track remained a holiday favorite within the country community during the '90s, even as Vince Vance struggled to establish himself as more than a one-hit novelty act. Despite the artist's struggles, his song remains a minor modern classic and received airplay year after year. Nothing else here is remotely worth bothering with. Sure, most of the other songs are similar in style to the title track, but this formulaic sense of repetition gets dull quickly. Stick with the song and forget about the full-length album, unless this is the only place you can find the song. ~ Jason Birchmeier
Vince Vance & The Valiants: Vince Vance, Kate Carlin.
| | Anthony Hamilton Point Of It All CD (2008)
Dirty Mind songs
$8.99 Not simply a crooner with a great voice, Anthony Hamilton is also a multi-talented songwriter, arranger, and producer in the tradition of visionary, self-directed artists like Donny Hathaway, Bill Withers, and Curtis Mayfield. THE POINT OF IT ALL is the North Carolina native's fourth proper full-length and it finds Hamilton comfortably ensconced in the same blend of organic instrumental textures, preprogrammed drum loops, and warm `70s soul signifiers that served him so well on 2005's AIN'T NOBODY WORRYIN'. The album's lead single, "Cool," is propelled by a deep bass-drum thump, supplemented by bright guitar arpeggios, an understated Fender Rhodes riff, and layer after layer of Hamilton's skillfully interwoven vocal tracks. The cumulative effect brings to mind the adventurous studio tinkering of late-period Marvin Gaye and the warm, neo-soul aesthetic pioneered by the likes of Atlanta's Organized Noize. All told, THE POINT OF IT ALL stands as another solid offering from one of contemporary R&B's most reliable craftsmen.

| | Ultimate Phyllis Hyman CD (2004) Remastered
Dirty Mind CD music
$8.99 Recorded between 1977 & 1995. Includes liner notes by David Nathan.
Out of all the Phyllis Hyman compilations -- of which there were roughly a dozen floating around by early 2004 -- Ultimate Phyllis Hyman is one of the more desirable looks at the singer's career. This works as an abbreviated version of 1996's two-disc The Legacy of Phyllis Hyman, and it focuses on the hits that were most popular, all the while including a handful of album cuts. Since it considers her stints with numerous labels (Buddah, Philadelphia International, Arista, Zoo), it holds an advantage over a number of compilations that rely on a specific era. "Loving You, Losing You," "Can't We Fall in Love Again," "Don't Wanna Change the World," and "Living in Confusion" are included, along with 13 others. ~ Andy Kellman
Producers include: Barry Manilow, James Mtume, Reginald Lucas, Norman Connors, Thom Bell, Narada Michael Walden.
Compilation producer: Rob Santos.
Liner Note Author: David Nathan.
Arrangers: Dexter Wansel; Hubert Eaves III; John Davis ; Jerry Peters; Onaje Allan Gumbs; Thom Bell.
