| | Mike Oldfield Tubular Bells CD Mike Oldfield Discography of CDs
(1 Customer Review)
When the rights to Mike Oldfield's classic 1973 album returned to him in 2008, he decided to reissue the piece in an expanded form. This 2009 release features a stereo remix and some other bonus material. The work itself still astounds, a densely layered, richly textured tapestry of sound that put "minimalist" musical ideas in a pop music context, and also presaged New Age instrumentals. Years later, the album still holds up, unveiling hidden, layered delights with each listen.
The 19-year old Mike Oldfield played virtually everything on the mostly instrumental TUBULAR BELLS. Employing fugue-like classical patterns and wildly eclectic instrumentation, which included the flageolet, the mandolin, and the Farfisa organ, Oldfield created an intricately shifting web of musical phrases that overlapped and interlocked to generate a seemingly endless variety of textures. Oldfield achieved this effect, in large part, by overdubbing hundreds of times during the recording process (Rolling Stone magazine quoted the number of overdubs at 2300).
The resulting album was a revelation, a densely layered, richly textured tapestry of sound that put "minimalist" musical ideas in a pop music context, and also presaged New Age instrumentals. The first album to be released on the Virgin label, TUBULAR BELLS was highly successful, in part because the ominous, tingling intro to the album was used in the film THE EXORCIST. A single version, sometimes called "Theme From The Exorcist," became a Top 10 hit, and the album hit #1 on the British album charts. Years later, the album still holds up, unveiling hidden, layered delights with each listen.
Standard edition includes the 2009 remastered version. 3 tracks

Tubular Bells album
$7.49 All songs written by Paul McCartney except "Medicine Jar" (Jimmy McCulloch/Colin Allen) and "Crossroads Theme" (Tony Hatch).
Includes 3 tracks that were not on the original release of VENUS & MARS.
VENUS & MARS is an interesting mix of musical styles, punctuated by Paul McCartney's unerring sense of melody and hooky songs. Along with founding members Paul McCartney, Linda McCartney & Denny Laine, recent additions Jimmy McCulloch (ex-Thunderclap Newman) Joe English rounded out the band on guitar and drums respectively. Guests for these sessions (partially recorded at New Orleans' famed Sea Saint Studios) included N'awlins pianist Allen Toussaint, saxophonist Tom Scott and guitarist Dave Mason.
The highlights include the hard-rocking anthem "Rock Show" (later used to great effect in the Rock For Kampuchea benefit concert five years later) and the gently nostalgic "You Gave Me The Answer," Macca's tribute to the sounds of vaudeville introduced to him by his late father. Elsewhere, the mysticism of the French Quarter is embedded within "Spirits Of Ancient Egypt" while New Orleans' rich R&B tradition is all over the horn-laden "Call Me Back Again." The bouncy number one single "Listen To What The Man Said" also contrasts nicely with the melancholic title track.

| | Georgie Fame On The Right Track: Beat, Ballad & Blues 1964-1971 - A Complete Hit Collection CD (2004) (Import) Australia
Tubular Bells CD music
$20.09 There have been several Georgie Fame compilations over the past decade, but it is this one on Raven that boils all of it down to the essence of his contribution to the Brit R&B beat-crazy scene of the 1960s and early '70s. Here are the singles, the hits, the near misses, and the worthy album cuts compiled to show the audacity, imagination, and wild, swinging toughness of Fame. Fame's earliest influences were Fats Domino and Little Richard, but by the time he cut his first album, Rhythm and Blues at the Flamingo, live at Great Britain's notorious jazz club, he was deeply under the sway of Mose Allison's Back Country Suite. And does that ever come across here. Fame was raw, in the moment, and always presenting his tracks with a slightly out of control feel. The 28 cuts here range from the jumping R&B of "Yeh Yeh" and Allison's classic "Work Song" to his stellar read of Titus Turner's "Get On the Right Track," a smoky version of Milt Jackson's "Bluesology," a deeply soulful take on the John Mayall/Jon Mark groover "Something," and the catchy pop ditty "The Ballad of Bonnie and Clyde," which reached number seven on the American charts. (It didn't hurt that the tune came out at the same time as the infamous movie starring Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway.) All of these are in the first half of the set and recorded before 1967! But Fame could croon, too, as evidenced by this beautiful version of Little Willie John's "Need Your Love So Bad," with strings. The camped-up R&B move on Willie Dixon's "Seventh Son" takes Allison's version a step further, his horn-heavy rolling stroll on Bob Dylan's "Down Along the Cove," with a female backing ...

| | Beatles Capitol Albums Vol. 2 CDs (2006) Box Set; Brick
Tubular Bells songs
$57.45 The songs appear in both their mono and stereo mixes (the latter is a particular enticement since the tracks from, say, BEATLES FOR SALE were previously available only in mono). The set also features the original stereo mixes of HELP! and RUBBER SOUL (which are different from the digital remixes that appear on the standard issue CDs of those albums). Naturally, the music is fantastic, and with the remarkable new sound, extensive notes, and a photo-packed booklet, this is a sure bet for Beatles fanatics. The set is available in both a long box and a standard CD-sized box.
The second ...

| Fall Complete Peel Sessions 1978-2004 CDs (2005) (Import) Box Set; United Kingdom
Tubular Bells CD music
$39.39 Work was well underway on The Complete Peel Sessions when the legendary John Peel passed away, so there's some comfort in the thought that the Fall's greatest cheerleader probably got to see and hear some kind of prototype of this incredible box set. He often referred to the band as "the mighty Fall": this box set is the evidence. Collecting all 24 sessions that the edgy, unclassifiable group did for Peel's radio program, this six-CD set is overwhelming and probably too much to digest for newcomers. Listeners who have already absorbed the excellent overview 50,000 Fall Fans Can't Be Wrong, picked up an album or two, and are up for a challenge should put this set near the top of their list because these sessions usually ran four songs long, forcing the often-wandering and sprawling Fall to cut to the chase if they wanted to make an impact. Despite Mark E. Smith's flippant attitude toward practically everything, the 24 sessions here all display a need to make that impact with an urgency and drive that's woefully absent from all but the band's best albums. Highlights are too numerous to list, and this puts the set next to 50,000 Fall Fans and This Nation's Saving Grace in the Fall "Hall of Fame." Adding to the box set's desirability -- and making it much easier to digest in small bites -- is the distinct, separative feeling these short sessions have. The late-1983 session finds the formerly angular, cerebral, and unapproachably snide band in love with its new sound -- one that's rocky, incredibly catchy, approachably snide, and heavily influenced by Smith's then-wife Brix. June ...
| | Michael Nesmith Silver Moon (Audio Legends) CD (2002)
Tubular Bells music CDs
$14.55 Although the cover art might suggest that this compiles, features, or in some way includes material from Michael Nesmith's four-year (1966-1970) tenure as a Monkee, this isn't the case at all. Additionally confusing matters is that the same 25 tracks on this collection are replicated -- right down to the exact running order -- on the unimaginatively titled Best Of: Original Hits. Regardless, the contents of both have been culled from Nesmith's first half-dozen post-Monkees long-players. The tune stack is well represented by the First National Band LPs Magnetic South (1970), Loose Salute (1970), and Nevada Fighter (1971) -- plus, to a much lesser extent, Tantamount to Treason (1972), And the Hits Just Keep on Comin' (1972), as well as Pretty Much Your Standard Ranch Stash (1973). Nesmith's penchant for penning quirky country & western-flavored pop songs can be directly traced back to his Monkees material, such as "St. Matthew," "Good Clean Fun," and "Magnolia Simms." During ...

Tubular Bells songs
$8.79 INFOMANIAC is a fine honing of the melodic folk-pop Nightmare of You have been crafting since their 2004 inception. Obvious influences from the Decemberists to Elliott Smith to the Smiths linger, but Brandon Reilly fronts the group with his own charming sneer and emotion, and he seems to have gotten more confident with his delivery since the last outing. "Eustacia Vye" might feel like a Colin Meloy knockoff, but Reilly and company add enough sunny pomp that the song flits between sea shanty and cabaret genres. After a while, Reilly's twee and intentionally meek voice can tend to grate, but jaunty pianos and guitar counter-melodies consistently ...
