On 1972's THE SECOND COMING, Bumps' Blackwell, the man who supervised all of the original legendary Little Richard hits, reunites many of the musicians used on the first recordings. It's a funkier, thick sound with less of the rock & roll fury of the earlier masters, with a rearrangement of "The Saints" that's chock-full of saxes and groove. It's truly a team effort between Blackwell and Richard Penniman; they co-write five of the nine compositions, with both men credited as producing and arranging. There's not a bad track here, though there also isn't any one number which stands out as a bona fide hit either. Little Richard's screams in "Rockin' Rockin' Boogie" provide subtle thunder, with the rock & roll abandon of his early sides replaced by a contained professional noise as the guitars wail underneath the bubbling rhythm.

Soul belter J.J. Jackson is best known for his 1967 smash, "But It's Alright," but he has some fine singles and a couple of excellent albums as well, and 1967's But It's Alright on the Calla label is one of them. Kicking off with the infectious title track, the record alternates between flat-out rockers like "I Dig Girls," "Come See Me (I'm Your Man)" (which was written by Jackson, covered by the Pretty Things, and then reclaimed powerfully here), and "Boogaloo Baby," midtempo groovers like "You've Got Me Dizzy" and "The Stones That I Throw," and ballads like "Try Me" and a righteous "A Change Is Gonna Come."
