Soundtrack English; Sensor Matic Director Paul Thomas Anderson's THERE WILL BE BLOOD is a masterly, unflinching examination of a consummately evil man. Daniel Plainview (via a transcendent performance by the great Daniel Day-Lewis) is, as he likes to remind those around him, an oil man: he finds it, he drills for it, and he makes money from it. Following a tip from a visitor named Paul Sunday, whose family sits atop a veritable ocean of oil, Plainview travels to the town of New Boston, California, with his young son. Sunday's preacher brother Eli (both roles are played by the excellent Paul Dano) grudgingly accepts Plainview's ambitions under the condition that he help fund the town church. As Plainview's plans come to fruition, a series of events begin to fracture the insular world he has constructed for himself, pitting Plainview against Sunday and forcing him to become even more vindictive and ruthless.
Anderson proved with BOOGIE NIGHTS and MAGNOLIA that he was adept at handling expansive storylines and layered plots; however, he stakes out a claim here as a new master of the cinematic epic. The film is visually stunning, and alternates between lush widescreen shots of the desert and meticulously composed, darkly lit close-up of his actors, presenting complex images of the American landscape and the souls that dot it. As a narrative, THERE WILL BE BLOOD is told with a sense of economy, yet never at the expense of the film's inherently grand scope. It's difficult to determine precisely what Anderson wants his viewers to take from the experience: the film is, in the end, appropriately complex and ambiguous. THERE WILL BE BLOOD forces us to confront Plainville, who seems to be a larger-than-life personification of evil; that we don't entirely understand him at the film's conclusion is not a shortcoming, but rather a tribute to the depths of this most vile creature and this most brilliant film. Theatrical Release: December 26, 2007 There Will Be Blood Reviews: "It flows smoothly, linearly, building momentum and unbearable tension....[Mr. Day-Lewis] seems to have invaded Plainview's every atom....It's a thrilling performance..."-- Manohla Dargis, New York Times "[The film] creates considerable heat and light and does some serious aesthetic damage....Day-Lewis and Anderson share a ferocity of approach to their work..."-- Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times "A complete universe is created before a word is spoken in THERE WILL BE BLOOD, a towering new American epic and instant modern classic..." -- Grade: A-- Lisa Schwarzbaum, Entertainment Weekly Ranked #7 in Rolling Stone's "10 Best Movies Of 2007" -- "[Anderson's] filmmaking is raw, risky and built to leave bruises. This is his bloody and brilliant CITIZEN KANE."-- Peter Travers, Rolling Stone "In P.T. Anderson's latest and most impressive vision of all-American excess, business and religion go the distance in a battle to the death..."-- Harlan Jacobson, Film Comment 4 stars out of 4 -- "THERE WILL BE BLOOD hits with hurricane force....In terms of excitement, imagination and rule-busting experimentation, it's a gusher."-- Peter Travers, Rolling Stone "[Dano's] combination of cherubic earnestness and steely composure recalls the young Ed Norton; his fire-and-brimstone sermons are the stuff of fever dreams, rivetingly played."-- Hannah McGill, Sight and Sound 5 stars out of 5 -- "The breadth of vision is impressive, but the lean, stark filmmaking more so....This is also Anderson's most classical movie..."-- Tom Charity, Uncut 5 stars out of 5 -- "The last scene is like a gusher, an explosion of high drama after all the low-key tension and unease."-- Helen O'Hara, Empire There Will Be Blood | Studio | Paramount Home Entertainment | | Orig Year | 2007 | | All Time Sales Rank | 107987 | | CD Universe Part number | 7943574 | | Discs | 1 | | Release Date | Jul 28, 2009 | | Rating | R (MPAA) | | Rating Reason | for some violence | | Running Time | 158 Minutes | | Movie Details | Color; Movoe Cash Coupon |
There Will Be Blood Video There Will Be Blood Movie Review Daniel Day-Lewis is magnificent Daniel Day-Lewis proves once more that he ranks among the best actors of all time. His performance is just as riveting and disturbing as the one he gave in “Gangs of New York.” His Academy Award is well-deserved, as is Robert Elswit’s for “Best Cinematography.” Submitted by sm.and (Hvidovre, Denmark) Was This Review Helpful? Wow!!! There Will Be Blood is an impressive work of art.Just when I thought Daniel Day-Lewis couldn't top his jaw-dropping performance in Gangs of New York,he blew me away with his new rivetting character,Daniel Plainview.Paul Dano deserves alot of credit for his role. The film's score is haunting and very reminiscent of the original Dracula soundtrack.Bottom Line:There Will Be Blood's tale of greed, money, power, and madness will make this an all-time classic. not as good as critics say it never ceases to amaze me that some very well done movies are crited to death as glorified beyond all limits. While the acting and cinemotography were excellent, story was somewhat lacking and the ending far fetched. I didn't know if he was looking for redemption or just a natural prick. The covers lame, and so's the movie!!! I didn't rent this movie for myself I rented it for someone else.Because I thought the movie looked boring, and lame.I'm not saying that people who rent it on purpose, and liked it,are boring, and lame. But it's possable.Anyway's I'd call this the type of movie you'd fastforward through, and get bored at watching it as it's fastforwarding. Also they don't need to spend million's of dollar's on a cr!ppy movie like this, that look's very amatuerish.Save it for a much better movie... There Will Be Blood review
$10.29 One of John Ford's most cherished projects, THE QUIET MAN took years to finance but became one of his greatest box-office successes and an enduringly beloved classic. John Wayne stars as Sean Thornton, a retired American boxing champion trying to put tragedy behind him by returning to Innisfree, the bucolic Irish village of his birth. He purchases his birthplace from its current owner, enraging the wealthy and bellicose Red Will Danaher (Victor McLaglen), who had designs on the property. On arriving at his cottage, Thornton finds it being swept out by Mary Kate Danaher (Maureen O'Hara), a redheaded vision from whom he steals a not completely unwelcome kiss. After engaging in a subterfuge involving a horse race, some of the locals manage to get the disgruntled Red Will to allow his sister to be courted by the American. But the courtship ritual of the village is only the first of many local practices that the bewildered Thornton must endure if he is to have Mary Kate. Wayne gives a surprisingly nuanced performance as the fish out of water, and he is perfectly matched with the radiantly rambunctious O'Hara. The rest of the cast is splendid as well, and the lush color photography garnered an Academy Award for Winston Hoch. John Ford also won an Oscar for his directing, and it's impossible not to be charmed by the artistry with which he weaves his rollicking, robust tale.
