| Splendid I have never seen a film with so much emotion as this beautiful creation. The film utilizes little dialogue and narration in the storytelling, relying on the visuals and the body language of the actors to convey the story. It is a wonderful pleasure, but Malick's style is not for everyone, particularly for those who need to have everything spelled out for them. | Action speaks louder than words! The New World was a visually beautiful movie to watch. The cinematography was the outstanding feature of this movie. The dialogue was sporadic, relying rather on emotion and sensitivity to carry the plot. I believe the story of Jamestown would be better told through the medium of the documentary. I would purchase it for its historical value. By rekroesser (Williamsburg, VA, USA) This review is for a different format. |
| I loved this movie I have always wanted to see this movie based on the trailers I have seen. The cinematography is awesome, and stirs the emotions. A wonderful story unique in that the director does not spoonfeed the viewer. The music is wonderful and stirring. If you are in to the usual "action" movie you are not going to like this movie. However the battle scenes are very good. The fort and native habitats look so authentic, the scenes of nature are wonderful. The acting is understated but authentic, and I thought well cast. I'll watch this move again and again. By moose-light (Tonronto,ON) This review is for a different format. |
| Not too good Never could understand what was going on.A few scenes were o.k. I guess. By Kris (Maryville, Tn) This review is for a different format. |
| No wonder this movie bombed at the box office When I saw the previews for this movie a few months before it came out I thought that this would be one of the best movies of the year. Boy was I wrong. The movie opens up with John Smith(quietly played by Colin Farrell)about to be hanged for a crime that we never hear anything about. He is saved and spends most of the movie wandering the forest and interacting with the Native Americans. Pocahontas, who is played by Q'Orianka Kilcher(an inexperienced actress who looks the part),comes in and catches the eye of Smith. The romance between Pocahontas and Smith is portrayed as a child-like romance for the two instead of what history suggests as a real love relationship. Performances by Christian Bale and Christopher Plummer are just as sustained as the two leads'. The musical score does'nt fit with the film's period. The nagging narration and dizzying cinematography remind me alot of Terrence Malick's other film,The Thin Red Line. Malick's style of film-making is unique, but it does'nt fit in with epics.
