With the release of GET LUCKY, Mark Knopfler has made as many solo studio albums as he made group studio albums with Dire Straits, which itself may be a signal that it's time to stop comparing his two careers and simply accept them as separate entities. Of course, since Knopfler was the lead singer, chief instrumentalist, and songwriter for Dire Straits, there are obvious similarities, even if he has taken a deliberately different path as a solo artist. Basically, he's a lot quieter. "Border Reiver," the first song here, begins with a pennywhistle and a piano, then strings join in. Soon enough, Knopfler's distinctive conversational baritone begins calmly intoning lyrics, and eventually there are examples of his melodic fingerpicked guitar style on both acoustic and electric guitar. He even works up to a smoldering swamp rock shuffle, a la J.J. Cale, on "Cleaning My Gun." But that's as close as he comes to really rocking out. More typical is "Hard Shoulder," a ballad that employs a twangy guitar sound and comes across as a number that Glen Campbell could have had a hit with back in his late-'60s "Wichita Lineman" heyday. The tunes support Knopfler's story-songs and musical character studies, as he describes or embodies truck drivers ("Border Reiver"), itinerant workers ("Get Lucky"), guitar makers ("Monteleone"), and sailors ("So Far from the Clyde"), among others, painting a portrait of pastoral and blue-collar life in the British Isles some time in the past.

Taking the place of the obligatory cd two-fer of GP and GREVIOUS ANGEL, Gram Parsons's THE COMPLETE REPRISE SESSIONS covers it all and then some for Grampires of all stripes. Produced by Emmylou Harris and Parsons cohort James Austin, this beautifully designed three-disc set includes one disc devoted to each solo record and a third featuring outtakes from each album's sessions. With fewer overdubs and Gram and Emmylou's vocals front-and-center in the mix, the final disc brims with the emotive soul and earthbound angelic vocals the two perfected. Among the final discs many highlights are looser alternate takes of "She" and "Streets of Baltimore" from GP and a "Hickory Wind" unadorned by the ridiculous fake crowd noise that mars the GRIEVOUS ANGEL version. The latter is the best and most stirring recorded performance of Parsons's signature song and alone worth the box's sticker price. Other features scattered on the first two discs include radio interviews (with Parsons's southern hippie charm in overdrive); captivatingly raw acoustic performances with him, Harris, and drummer N.D. Smart; and an instrumental version of "Return of the Grievous Angel" that reveals just how ace a country band the Waycross longhair had.

Phestur began life in early spring of 1999. Early on the revolving doors of line up changes was a constant spin until the right fit for that time was fullfilled. By mid-2000 the final line up that would carry the band for the next 6 years was complete. The early years of Phestur took on a life of it\'s own. The band was full on grunge/punk, and hit the stages unrelentlessly from southern Ohio to Canada putting in an average of 100+ shows a year. In that time the band also released several discs including 3 full length and as many \'teasers\' and a selected hits album.\'Phestur\' released in early 2000, \'Fujita\'s Pad\' came along in the fall of 2000, \'Here it Comez\' released in late 2001, and \'Phestur 3\' in early 2003.In mid 2003 the band signed a one album deal with Sonic Wave International putting out their 3rd. full length album \'Phestur 3\' but renaming the album Phestur-Downtown and Underground. This album earned the band 2 Grammy considerations for nomination. \'Jaded Me\'-best hard rock performance, and the album \'Downtown and Underground\'-best rock album. Just to be considered was a huge step for the band.In early 2006 the band\'s line up changed once again. This opened up new doors and set the stage for the biggest advance in the band\'s sound.
