Fidelio Movie Review  The "Fidelio" for Video Collectors
This 1991 Covent Garden production finds cast, director and pit in full accord. In my view, the star is Maestro von Dohnanyi, of Cleveland Orchestra fame. His brisk tempi and clear textures reveal the splendors of Beethoven's score. And the bracing pace keeps the action moving, right up to the big dungeon standoff in the second act. Sure, Protschka looks a bit well-fed for a prisoner in isolation, but his clarion tones and facial expressions carry the day. Beoaekova is impressive throughout, and the lesser male roles--Lloyd and Archer in particular--are well done. The design and direction are traditional and direct--no neo-Nazis or street gangs here--and the lighting effects are atmospheric. The Dolby Surround track puts you right in the middle of the house, and stage noise is not a problem. This heads to the top of my "Fidelio" list, and I'd recommend it, regardless of audio or video format.

compared to the tape we have from the same performance, the new DVD is
visually somewhat
better, but the sounds of the orchestra and the singers are poorly matched.

This Joint Is Jumpin' celebrates the exemplary life and work of the greatest of jazz entertainers. Fats started playing church organ at age 10 and his all-action musical career ended, full speed ahead, at the age of 39. He had written probably 950 to a thousand tunes, many of them sold for 'beer-money' to greedy music publishers. He had touched a whole generation of fellow musicians with his extraordinary piano style, notably the strong left hand of stride. He had played classics, the Three Bs (Bach, Beethoven & Brahms) at Carnegie Hall. This documentary features his son, Maurice Waller, and Eddie Barefield and Marshal Royal, fellow musicians. Sammy Price and Paul Machlin talk about stride and Andy Razaf's widow, Jean Hutson, remembers him.

This stage production from 1990 actually constitutes a ballet adaptation of Nikos Kazantzakis's much-loved novel ZORBA THE GREEK, set to music by Mikos Theodorakis, who scored the 1964 film of ZORBA. Performed at the Arena di Verona in 1990, it stars Vladimir Vassiliev as the title character, Gheorghe Iancu as John, Luciano Savignano as Marina, and Rosalba Garavelli as Madame Ortense.
