When the highly religious Sang-Hyun volunteers himself to be a test subject for a new vaccine, the procedure turns him into a vampire with little regard for his previous beliefs, meaning that his childhood friend’s wife--and her neck-- are no longer off limits. Thirst Reviews: "[T]he film is tightly knitted with echoing motifs....[Kim Ok-vin's] eyes express everything between yes and no, and she is demonically able to shift through a whole lexicon of contradictory emotions in one blink."-- Film Comment Staff, Film Comment 3 stars out of 5 -- "[T]here is no denying that THIRST casts a hypnotic visual spell over its vampiric goings-on."-- Richard Mowe, Box Office "[A] rare vampire movie with serious intellectual heft, ravishing undead, biting passion and a healthy splash of irony as well as iron in all that spilled blood..."-- Betsy Sharkey, Los Angeles Times "Fans of vampire movies are not likely to see anything more graphic, extreme or twisted than THIRST."-- Claudia Puig, USA Today "It is a bloodstained horror movie, a dark comedy, a noirish psychodrama of crime and punishment, a melodrama of mad love, a freehanded literary adaptation and, of course, a vampire movie."-- A. O. Scott, New York Times "[A] gaudy, daring, operatic, and bloody funny provocation of a melodrama from Park Chan-wook....THIRST is gorgeous, every shot a keeper, even as blood flows in rivers and hell beckons." -- Grade: A--- Lisa Schwarzbaum, Entertainment Weekly "[I]ts turgid pace creates a queasy fascination all its own, drawing viewers into an ever-darkening locus of sin and obsession..." -- Grade: B-- Keith Phipps, A.V. Club 3 stars out of 4 -- "Movies exist to cloak our desires in disguises we can accept, and there is an undeniable appeal to THIRST."-- Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times

$10.29 Youth gangs took over the slums of Rio de Janiero during the 1960s and didn't relinquish their stronghold until the mid-1980s. Only a sucker wouldn't have turned to crime and this is exactly how naive teen Rocket (Alexandre Rodrigues) views himself. His attempts in illegal activity fail as he finds potential victims too friendly. Equally unsuccessful in love, he regularly fails to lose his virginity. Blood spills throughout the streets of the Ciudad de Deus as gang leader Li'l Ze (Leandro Firmino da Hora) is challenged by local druglords and a gang of pre-teens known as the Runts. Rocket shoots all of this action with his weapon of choice, a camera.

$31.99 In this dazzling epic from Akira Kurosawa, a petty thief named Kagemusha (Tatsuya Nakadai) gets saved from a death sentence because he resembles the warlord Shingen Takeda (also Nakadai). The warlord has been fighting two other leaders for control of 16th-century Japan and impersonators often take his place during battles to put him out of harm's way. Because of Kagemusha's strong physical similarities to the warlord, he's a perfect choice for a "shadow warrior." However, the arrangement suddenly changes when Shingen gets fatally wounded while watching a battle. Adhering to Shingen's final wish, the warlord's men keep the death a secret, and Kagemusha struggles to transform himself from a criminal into a leader.
KAGEMUSHA marked a welcome return for the legendary director, who had not made a movie since 1974. Nakadai, a supporting player in earlier Kurosawa films, expertly portrays the leading role(s), almost always filled in the past by Toshirô Mifune. KAGEMUSHA also features the final screen appearance of longtime Kurosawa actor, Takashi Shimura. In order to help the film get an international release, ...

$19.55 With INLAND EMPIRE, David Lynch--creator of such mind-bending works as ERASERHEAD and LOST HIGHWAY--delivers his most avant-garde, abstract, and impenetrable vision yet. A three-hour fever nightmare of a motion picture, INLAND EMPIRE takes the basic structure of Lynch's 2001 masterpiece, MULHOLLAND DRIVE, and spins it even further out of control. A blonde actress (Laura Dern) is preparing for her biggest role yet, but when she finds herself falling for her co-star (Justin Theroux), she realizes that her life is beginning to mimic the fictional film that they're shooting. Adding to her confusion is the revelation that the current film is a remake of a doomed Polish production, 47, which was never finished due to an unspeakable tragedy. And that's the only the beginning. Soon, a seemingly endless onslaught of indescribably bizarre situations flashes across the screen: a sitcom featuring humans in bunny suits, a parallel story set in a wintry Poland, a houseful of dancing streetwalkers, screwdrivers in stomachs, menacing Polish carnies, and much, much more. By the time the film's electrifying closing-credit sequence arrives, even diehard Lynch fans will be gasping for air. What most glaringly differentiates INLAND EMPIRE from Lynch's previous work is the format on which it was shot. This is the first time that he has chosen to shoot on digital video, as opposed ...

$20.71 In the movie SCHOOL DAZE, Spike Lee staged a dance number in which two bands of African-American college students debated the merits of "Straight and Nappy" hair in song, and now comedian Chris Rock and filmmaker Jeff Stilson have extended the conversation to a full-length film in this witty documentary with serious undertones. Rock says he was inspired to make the film when his young daughter asked him, "Daddy, how come I don't have good hair?" and he and Stilson examine black America's obsession with their hair. They visit the Bronner Brothers International Hair Show, an annual ...
