Fresh from his success with HBO's ENTOURAGE, Jeremy Piven gives his career a further boost by taking the lead role in director Joe Carnahan's (NARC) fast-paced thriller, SMOKING ACES. Piven plays Buddy "Aces" Israel, a former Vegas performer who has holed up in the penthouse suite of a Lake Tahoe casino after what seems like half the planet decides they want him dead. The reason for this bloodlust stems from Israel's dalliances with the mob, who have put a $1 million price tag on his head after discovering he is about to tell all to the feds. The only people who don't want to put a premature end to Israel's life are two FBI agents, played by Ryan Reynolds and Ray Liotta, and their boss, Andy Garcia. As various assassins attempt to put an end to Israel's pitiful existence, a parade of celebrity cameos ensues, including Alicia Keys, Common, Ben Affleck, and Jason Bateman.
Carnahan soaks the screen with vivid primary colors, lots of flashy set pieces, and plenty of guns and violence as his movie thunders from one explosive scene to the next. The shooting style, script, and acting are all highly indebted to Quentin Tarantino's early works, and the impressive ensemble cast will ensure plenty of PULP FICTION comparisons. Standout performances come courtesy of Piven and Liotta, with the former reveling in a character surrounded by burly bodyguards, cheap hookers, and a blizzard of cocaine as he sweats and paces around his penthouse hideout, ultimately awaiting either freedom or death as the movie nears its spectacular finale. Don't believe the hype. I was told this film was violence all the way through. It only has like 4 big shooting scenes.Story line is confusing & it reminded me of a watered down Snatch.Atleast Snatch had more violence in it then this one did. Explosive, bold , and gritty, with a heavy twist of Quinton If you are in the mood for an action packed film with a fast tempo, great characters, solid acting ,graphic yet realistic violence centered by a plot that grabs you up and suspends you in a non predictable, humor-spiked roller coaster ride; This is your flick. If you dig Quinton T. You will not be let down. Piv is searing in this , and is surrounded by a great cast. A tasty film I highly recomend to all action fans. Best movie in its class since Kill Bill! Nothing smokin about these aces Smokin Aces had the potential to be something special, but it turned out to be a flop. The characters are fun to watch, but at times they go way too over-the-top.The story becomes more and more complicated as it goes on and the ending is disappointing.Bottom Line:there is nothing special about this movie. $10.55 Replacing Vivien Leigh after she was felled by illness, Elizabeth Taylor stars as Ruth Wiley, a young English bride whose wealthy husband, John (Peter Finch), has spirited her off to his vast tea plantation in the jungles of Ceylon. Initially excited to be in this new environment, Ruth soon discovers that her new husband considers her no more than an attractive possession who can't compete for his attention with activities like indoor polo with his cronies. Since this and similar games absorb much of John's time, his friend Dick Carver (Dana Andrews) actually runs the plantation. No mere businessman, the sensitive Carver likes to rattle off Chopin nocturnes, and he and Ruth soon become involved. Now eager to leave a house that has become like a prison, Ruth asks Dick to take her to Paris, and he agrees. But an epidemic of cholera suddenly breaks out, and everyone on the plantation is put under quarantine. To add to their problems, Ruth has learned that her husband's father built their house directly in the path of an elephant walk--and the local elephants have suddenly become very restless. This slick soap opera reveals Sri Lanka to be a land of great natural beauty.
A young bride finds herself out of place at the Elephant Walk tea plantation in British Ceylon. Elizabeth Taylor stars.

$9.29 A rougher version of George Roy Hill's pet theme of men as overaged adolescents, SLAP SHOT stars Paul Newman as Reggie Dunlop, the venerable player-coach of the Charlestown Chiefs, a fifth-rate minor league hockey team. When their blue-collar town falls prey to Rust Belt ills of the 1970s, attendance drops, and the greedy owner starts looking for a buyer, anxious to cash out. Dunlop is informed that the players need to crank up the box office to keep their jobs in what will likely be their last season. To the coach's dismay, general manager Joe McGrath (Strother Martin) imports the Hanson brothers, a hockey Three Stooges who like to assault soda machines and play with toys. But once Dunlop turns them loose, they're a Panzer division on ice, and the team starts winning by adopting their bone-crushing style. Although the team is on the upswing, Dunlop's wife, Francine (Jennifer Warren), seems to be through with him, and the isolated wives of the other players aren't much happier with their fate. This sidesplitting, profanity saturated film is one of the funniest ever made about any sport. While writer Nancy Dowd intended to probe darker issues--such as the greed of ownership, the blood lust of fans, and the childishness of the players--Hill submerges them in raucous laughter. Newman is near his peak as the romantic, manipulative, womanizing, hard-drinking coach, and the high-sticking Hanson brothers achieve comic immortality in their only film appearance.
