Whereas many bands start out with a basic sound and get progressively more experimental as they flex their creative muscles, Clutch, over the course of 15 albums, stripped down its music to its bare, heavy essence, garnering an intensely loyal fan base in the process. STRANGE COUSINS FROM THE WEST finds Clutch heavily steeped in `70s-style heavy blues rock, spitting out a heaping bong load of chugging guitar/bass/drums/vocal jams refreshingly free from multi-tracked six-string overdubs and studio trickery. Songs such as the Mountain-seque "50,000 Unstoppable Watts" and the swampy, funky "Witchdoctor" represent a tight, rockin' band doing what they do best with no excuses and no compromises.

Alternative Press (p.106) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "It's one of their strongest albums....STRANGE COUSINS is a righteous blend of dirty, raw swamp-sludge blues and the band's patented brand of raucous riff-rock..." Strange Cousins From The West album
$10.69 Sounding loose and more lively than their earlier major-label releases, Jam Room is Clutch at their down-home finest. Rarely will a band's sixth full-length disc manage to be this fresh and confident. From the opening moments of Jam Room's first crushing track, "Who Wants to Rock," these Maryland rockers send a clear message that the business at hand is getting down and having fun. There are a few dark exceptions to the good-time groove-mongering. Most notable among them is the alcoholic melodrama "Basket of Eggs" and the instrumental slugfest "Swamp Boot Upside Down." These moodier tracks generously allow listeners to catch some breath before getting slapped ...
| | Clutch Pitchfork & Lost Needles CD (2005)
Strange Cousins From The West CD music
$10.69 Includes the complete PITCHFORK 7" EP (1991) and rare bonus tracks.
Pitchfork & Lost Needles includes Clutch's debut 7" in its four-song entirety and augments that with unreleased tracks and demo versions. As this set proves, the veteran quartet began as a band crouched between the Melvins, a viscous form of hardcore (think a slower, more economic Sick of It All), and the literate but still loud post-punk of Jawbox. "Wicker" is in blistering half-time, its layers of needling guitars and Neil Fallon's yawping proclamations ("Pacemaker! LIFE TAKER!") skinned to their barest, most powerful essence. ...

$9.49 Coming to grips with the Sword's unlikely genesis in the alternative music Mecca of Austin, TX, leads one to wonder whether heavy metal has finally become hip again. Depending on your generation, nothing will seem as simultaneously preposterous (Gen-X'ers who came of age during pop-metal's heyday and don't recognize it as an unrepresentative ...
