One of the most satisfying examples of the genre of early-80s British synthpop. Thomas Dolby's debut is surprisingly warm, human, and at times nostalgic, qualities not usually associated with synthesized music.
Ballads like "Airwaves," "Weightless," and the enveloping, operatic "Cloudburst At Shingle Street," are thoughtful and direct, and the more upbeat songs, like "Radio Silence" and the manic "Europa and the Pirate Twins" (featuring harmonica by XTC's Andy Partridge), are as fun and catchy as anything released in 1982. Purists may feel that the original version of the album, featuring two early tracks dropped off this second US edition, is superior, but in either incarnation THE GOLDEN AGE OF WIRELESS is a synthpop classic.
Digitally remastered and expanded two disc (CD + NTSC/Region 0 DVD) edition of the British keyboardist's 1982 debut album including bonus tracks and bonus DVD. The Golden Age Of Wireless was recorded using primarily borrowed studio time and featuring musicians paid with funds raised by session work with other artists. A while after completion, it was picked up by EMI for the UK and by an EMI partner in the US resulting in a number of variations before it's final release. This release has been restored to its original sequence, remastered and with the addition of a few peripheral songs and rarities along with the individual song notes, should help tell the complete story. EMI. 2009.

Golden Age Of Wireless music CDs
$85.49 Berry Gordy moved Motown from Detroit to Los Angeles at the end of 1968 but, like an earthquake, not all of the aftershocks were felt after the initial shift. It took a while for all the dust to settle, for Motown to start feeling like it belonged to Hollywood instead of the Motor City, for the label to get to the point where the showbiz began to eclipse the soul, and that year was 1971. That year, Gordy slowly started to recede from the day-to-day operations of the label, choosing to pursue interests in film and television, but Motown hardly shut down in his absence: they churned out more 45s than ever, releasing so many singles in the course of a single year that when it came time for Hip-O Select to cover 1971 in their comprehensive The Complete Motown Singles series, they had to split the year into two multi-disc box sets. This, Vol. 11A, covers the first six months of 1971, six months that had enough activity for a year -- a full six discs of material, to be precise. The entirety of Motown's 1970 singles output fit onto a six-disc set for Vol. 10, so it stands to reason that 1971 either was an embarrassment of riches or found the label stretching itself a little thin.
The Complete Motown Singles, Vol. 11A: 1971 proves the latter to be true, containing ...

Golden Age Of Wireless songs
$24.65 Boasting a brilliant title and snappy cover art, The Singular Thomas Dolby collects all of Dolby's A-sides -- a whopping 19 of them -- and adds a DVD of his often groundbreaking music videos as a second disc. Combined, the two do indeed offer all the singles that the synth pop maverick had, sequenced in chronological order on both the CD and DVD, and while this approach might not cover every major song of Dolby's -- notably "The Flat Earth" is absent -- it does provide a thorough, ...
| | Thomas Dolby Flat Earth CD (1984) Remastered
Golden Age Of Wireless album
$11.65 Exceptionally mature for a sophomore effort, The Flat Earth has held up considerably well since its 1984 release. This staying power belongs to a fantastic ensemble of supporting players as much as to Thomas Dolby's songwriting and crisp production. "Dissidents" steps in cautiously and conjures images of blacklisted authors and ugly snow, gray from oppression. Here and elsewhere, Matthew Seligman's bass is a welcome addition -- throughout the album his work is lavish, growling, popping through octaves, funk-a-fied and twinkling with harmonics. The title track, "The Flat Earth," is a wondrous R&B daydream of piano and Motown stabs of rhythm guitar. "Screen Kiss" has a similarly ethereal quality, and the lyrics are lush with imagery, if occasionally cryptic. "White City"'s drug reference and ...
