IS HE LISTENING? is the fourth Tzadik release by the Israeli multi-instrumentalist Koby Israelite. The label notes state that IS HE is Israelite's "sly take on easy listening." Sly it may be since what strikes one about the album, at least on first hearing, is the heavy, tight, and loud rock guitar playing and exuberant drumming. To be sure there are all the familiar Jewish and klezmer themes on hand as well as a variety of instruments to play them, including accordion (guest Marius Manole from the neo-gypsy band gypsy band Taraf de Haidouks), clarinet, mandolin, and buzuki. Israelite plays all of these instruments and others too numerous to list but what ultimately comes across is a strong, centered musical personality holding together the frequent overdubbing, hard-edged drum-and-bass rhythms, and lively Balkan- Middle Eastern styles.

Is He Listening?
$13.89 One thing about the Klezmatics, they're not afraid of a little controversy with their klezmer music. Here they stir the ashes a couple of times, with an English-Yiddish cover of Holly Near's "I Ain't Afraid" that comes twice on the disc, and points out the pitfalls of what people do in the name of religion, and also in "Loshn-Koydesh," an unusual tale of a Hebrew lesson with an appropriately seductive melody to match the words. This time around the emphasis is most definitely on songs, rather than instrumentals, and for the most part they keep their fire quite restrained, rarely letting the instrumental work fly into the stratosphere as they have in the past. Where they do, on "Katz ...
| | John Coltrane Love Supreme CDs (1964) Remastered; Deluxe Edition; Digipak
Is He Listening?
$21.05 Digitally remastered using 20-bit technology by Erick Labson.
A LOVE SUPREME is the essential example of the genius of John Coltrane. In what has become the apotheosis of jazz music, this eminently accessible work bridges the gap between music and spirituality, between art and life. With the ultimate incarnation of the jazz quartet, Coltrane brings together all of his turbulent elements into a cohesive paean to spirituality, one which is fully appreciable by the uninitiated.
A LOVE SUPREME is a 33-minute work divided into four movements. "Acknowledgment" starts the album with a heraldic summoning from Coltrane's tenor saxophone, ...

Is He Listening?
$11.49 Spaceways Incorporated/Zu (Italy): Luca T. Mai (saxophone); Massimo Pupillo, Nate McBride (bass guitar); Jacopo Battaglia (drums); Hamid Drake, Ken Vandermark.
The helpful folks at Atavistic suggest the term "bronto-bassism" to describe the music of this ad hoc collective, which includes members of the Italian free jazz trio Zu and Chicago noisemakers Spaceways Inc. It's as good a designation as any, especially on the vaguely funky, ponderous-yet-agile opening tracks, which are provided by Zu in collaboration with Spaceways Inc.'s reedman, Ken Vandermark. These ...
