The soulful, raspy voice and aching lyrics of Geoff Barradale on Vitamin Z's "Burning Flame" helped the song become of 1985's standout singles, and it almost outclasses everything else on the band's debut LP, Rites of Passage. There's nothing musically innovative about "Burning Flame," but it should make every list of the '80s finest moments. Sung with unrestrained passion, Barradale almost sounds a male version of Alison Moyet as he details the pain of seeing an ex-lover with somebody else. The subject matter is nothing new, but the scorched emotions in Barradale's vocals can be deeply felt. A track like "Burning Flame" can summarize an artist's career; for Vitamin Z, however, there are other songs on Rites of Passage that can easily justify the group's existence. "Every Time That I See You" is another heartbreaking ballad, probably about the same person Barradale is yearning for in "Burning Flame." "Hi Hi Friend" is upbeat synth-pop with sharp, hummable hooks. The lyrics in Rites of Passage are simple and straightforward; they are most effective in how they are sung, not written. When Barradale sings, "I felt the Earth fall apart and crumble/all my dreams, down they fell" in "Burning Flame," the sorrow in his voice is deeply moving. Rites of Passage is worth seeking out for that song alone, but anybody expecting just a one-hit wonder might find a surprise or two. ~ Michael Sutton

Rites Of Passage album
$11.35 This is a nice changeup. The Innocence Mission return with a benefit collection of cover songs that are all centered reverie akin to dreaming. Calling them all lullabies would be stretching a little bit, but the presentations are such that they might as well be. Don and Karen Peris and bassist Mike Bitts craft an absolutely beguiling collection of standards. The readings of "Over the Rainbow," "Wonderful World," and "Moon River" form a gorgeous sequence. The inclusion of an instrumental, Chopin's Prelude in A, is a choice moment as well (played beautifully by Don), and is followed by a haunting, nostalgic version of Michel Legrand's "Once Upon a Summertime." The one original on the set, Karen's "My Love Goes With You," is a lullaby proper and is perhaps the most beautiful and tender song on the outing. That it's followed by "Edelweiss" is only fitting. The title track is, appropriately, the set's closer. Peris' wispy vocal carries the fleeting traces of ...

Rites Of Passage music CDs
$5.99 GIVE IT UP is the high point in Bonnie Raitt's early career. On it she brings together her R&B, folk, and straight blues influences with a mellow soft rock approach that would become synonymous with the California FM sound, yet none of these elements dominate--Raitt mixes the sounds perfectly. The result is an accessible, sensual music that never relies on cliché for effect, a sound that laid the foundation for her future commercial success.

Rites Of Passage CD music
$16.25 Leaves' Eyes (basically, the German band Atrocity plus former Theatre of Tragedy vocalist Liv Kristine) took four years between their second album,Vinland Saga, and this one. In between, they've released two EPs with almost a full album's worth of B-sides between them, and a live disc, but still, the pressure must have been on to come up with a major statement, and they've done so. Njord is a sweeping, epic album that exemplifies the band's Gothic/Viking metal sound, with the clean, clear vocals of Liv Kristine contrasted against the guttural death growls of ...
