(1 Customer Review)
Despite their forming in 2005, hip-hop supergroup La Coka Nostra (a loose collective of emcees comprising House of Pain members Danny Boy and Everlast, Non Phixion's Ill Bill, and Special Teamz's Slaine) only got around to releasing their debut full-length after four years--an eternity in music industry terms. The group's much anticipated album, A BRAND YOU CAN TRUST, is clearly a throwback to hip-hop's late-`90s "golden era" producers and emcees, bearing little resemblance to the glossy pop-rap of the `00s. A battery of solid beats by DJ Lethal and Alchemist (whose ominous production echoes his work with East Coast dons Mobb Deep) perfectly complements the raspy, matter-of-fact vocal styles of Ill Bill and Everlast, particularly on the Snoop Dogg featured hardcore anthem, "Bang Bang."
Personnel: Russell Ali (guitar); Baby Jesus (bass guitar); DJ Lethal, Danny Boy, Everlast, Ill Bill, Slaine.
Photographer: Danny Boy O'Connor.

| | Main Source Breaking Atoms CD (1991)
Brand You Can Trust album
$9.55 Main Source's debut album, Breaking Atoms, is one of the quintessential cult classics in hip-hop history. Underappreciated compared to peers like A Tribe Called Quest, Gang Starr, or even Brand Nubian, the album probably doesn't get wider acclaim because it was recorded for the ill-fated Wild Pitch label, and thus remained out of print for much of the time its reputation was spreading. Group focal point the Large Professor is a fine rapper, but the album's legend rests more on his production -- he debuts one of the most influential styles in hip-hop here, popularizing a number of now widely imitated techniques. Luckily, you don't have to know how to operate an SP-1200, or exactly what panning, chopping, and filtered basslines are, to appreciate the vibrant-sounding results. His intricately constructed tracks are filled with jazz and soul samples, layered percussion, off-kilter sampling effects, and an overall sonic richness. That's doubtlessly enhanced by the presence of two DJs in the group, who contribute lively scratching to the proceedings as well. The album is rather brief, clocking in at around 45 minutes even with a bonus remix, but there's also no wasted space whatsoever. The brightly soulful "Lookin' at the Front Door" is perhaps the best-known single, but there are plenty of other highlights. "Just a Friendly Game of Baseball" ...

| | Bloody Mary Black Pearl CD (2009) (Import) Remix; Netherlands
Brand You Can Trust album
$17.09 Minimal techno can't usually be described as "fun." At its best, it may be rhythmically compelling (though not usually "funky"), and its practitioners may wield texture in subtly interesting ways. But all too often it is simply chilly and soulless, all of its eggs placed in the single basket of trebly 909 beats, simplistic basslines, and static chord progressions. There's something different about Marjorie Migliaccio (aka Bloody Mary)'s full-length debut, though -- maybe it's the fact that her music can't really be entirely classified as minimal techno; maybe it's just a certain native intelligence and a deep-seated concern for the pleasure of those on the dancefloor. While Black Pearl isn't exactly a non-stop party, there is very definitely a streak of hedonism that emerges, almost alchemically, ...
